Brett Nottingham - yvonne - 12-21-2010

Has anyone ever seen Brett Nottingham, the freshman QB who originally verballed with UCLA?

Re: Brett Nottingham - RightWing - 12-21-2010

Saw him practice a couple of times last fall. Physically, he\'s very impressive, built a lot like Luck. He\'s also fast, has a very good arm, and seemed quite confident on the field. I have  high hopes for this guy and believe he will give Stanford continued excellent QB play after Luck departs.

Re: Brett Nottingham - Hank 91 - 12-21-2010

In my head I\'ve always thought Nottingham was the heir apparent, and that even if Luck were to leave after this year, he would get the nod over Nunes in 2011.  This is based on absolutely nothing more than what I read about Nottingham when he committed last spring.  Does anyone have any more information than that?

I don\'t but... - JohnR34231 - 12-22-2010

.......it seems JH is having a hard time deciding who is the guy between Nunes and Picazo, and I don\'t think that\'s because they both have Luck-type ability.

My guess is that Nottingham will be the one.

Or... - Redrum - 12-22-2010

Nottingham in camp hasn\'t shown enough to make Harbaugh stop dithering between Nunes and Picazo.   But, he\'s young still,  so its probably your take over my take.

When it comes to PASSING - Redrum - 12-22-2010

I don\'t think anyone sitting in the stands or watching games on TV has a clue which QB (beyond Luck) can run Stanford\'s full offense.
The few passes Loukas has thrown over the last two years have failed to impress.   Nunes hasn\'t looked comfortable in his brief appearances.  Probably unrealistic to expect it to be otherwise.

If Luck comes back, we might just be delaying the dilemma one season.   Harbaugh is mostly old school in his approach to playing time.  If you are a starter,  you play 90-95% of the snaps unless the scheme or normal rotation dictate otherwise.   The QB is hardly affected by that exception.   JH doesn\'t seem inclined to spend dedicated serious game time to building for the future by playing backup QBs,  so although Loukas has more time in the program, his game experience advantage over others is slight.   Maybe that will change,  but the easy answer is:  Luck returns and Bowlsby hires a staffer just to continually whisper in Harbaugh\'s ear:  "The game is won, Jim.  Let [ insert name here] get some real playing time."  But JH will also have on his agenda a Voldemort for Luck,  so I\'m guessing not much will change.

Re: Brett Nottingham - slide - 12-22-2010

on Loukas, will he petition the NCAA for a 6th year?  does he want to come back for a 6th year?

That was my thinking, I assumed he wasn\'t going to bother trying to stay a 6th year.  I also wouldn\'t be surprised to see one of the young guys pass him on the depth chart after another year (remember, Nunes and Pic are both sophmores who\'ve had almost no chance for game time and Nottingham red-shirted, I think).  Presumably they\'ll all show at least some improvement by next year, and probably more than a little.

Re: Brett Nottingham - mark3k - 12-22-2010

When is Dallas Lloyd due back from his mission?  IIRC, he was ranked exactly 1 slot below Nottingham by Scout.com coming out out of high school.

Re: Brett Nottingham - yvonne - 12-22-2010

Usually Mormon missions are two years.

For a lineman or a running back, staying out two years is time to get bigger and stronger, but for a quarterback, that time is time that would have been spent learning the play book and familiarizing himself with receivers.

Re: Brett Nottingham - rwait08 - 12-22-2010

Speaking of missions, Taysom Hill should be returning next year, right?  Don\'t know if he has a shot at QB, though.

If missions go as they usually do - Redrum - 12-22-2010

Both Hill and Lloyd will arrive for camp in 2012.   Taysom Hill delayed his mission departure for a year.   OTOH,  the reason that Sione Fua is done with his Stanford playing days is he came back from a mission after only one year.

And don\'t forget that Skylar Mornhinweg ( say that three times as fast as you can)  also committed previously for the class of 2012.   I think the time between his commitment and his arrival is about the same amount of time  between launch and when space probes arrive to fly by Jupiter.

And, once again,  I\'ll just note that all this won\'t matter.  The Mayan calendar runs out in 2012,  probably just after Mornhinweg is named starting QB coming out of Fall camp.

Re: Brett Nottingham - fyao - 12-22-2010

Alex Loukas was a qb, then a safety, when he got injured in practice.  The fact that he doesn\'t appear to be a great passer and he still switched back to qb doesn\'t seem to speak well for Nunes and Picazo.  The switch back I think occurred before Nottingham came on campus, so it may or may not say anything for him.

Re: Brett Nottingham - yvonne - 12-22-2010

Mornhinweg...probably knows football

Nottingham is a true freshman.

Re: Brett Nottingham - Hank 91 - 12-22-2010

I\'ve always felt like Loukas was used the way he was this year because Harbaugh figured he might as well be used for something at some point.  He was good for what he was, coming in to run the ball every once in a while, even though I never liked seeing him come in, just the same way I didn\'t like it when Walsh pulled Stenstrom for Scott Frost.
