Stanford MSoc players get national team call-up - washingtonismoney - 07-28-2015

US Soccer is making call-ups for its u-23 team, which will (if it qualifies) go to the Olympics. Several Stanford players got call-ups: Tomas Hillard-Arce; Brandon Vincent; and Corey Baird.

In addition to those guys, it's a stone cold lock that Jordan Morris will be a part of that Olympic team as well, since he'll still be under 23 and the summer of 2016 will be something of a dead spot in the men's international soccer calendar otherwise, so duties with the senior USMNT wouldn't keep him from being on that team.  It's been a lot of fun to see him step into his role with the senior USMNT and not miss a beat.

Our men's Olympic team could be pretty solid, given that a few players from the senior roster/player pool will still be age-eligible: Morris, DeAndre Yedlin, Julian Green, and John Anthony Brooks.  Add in three over-age players at key positions (like Howard/Guzan at GK, maybe Bradley in MF to keep things calm), and this team could be capable of a deep run.  I don't think too many other of the men's Olympic rosters can boast that many senior national team players.

It'll be interesting to see if any of these other Stanford guys can fight their way onto the U-23 team and displace some of the guys from the U-23 team that just played in the Toulon tournament in France. Most of the existing roster is comprised of players playing professional soccer or who are part of a club's academy.

The mere fact that the U-23 team is holding a camp with all of these college players is a testament to the impact Jordan Morris has had on Jürgen Klinsmann's thinking about the quality of college soccer.  And all of that started with the USMNT's pre-World Cup camp at Stanford, where Morris impressed Klinsmann and made him realize that there might be some USMNT-caliber (or future USMNT-caliber) players that he's missing out on if he's only looking at the professional ranks.Â
