Eight of top 100 most violent cities in CA, Oakland #2 - Mick - 06-30-2015

Here's a list of the Top 100 most violent cities (with 25,000 or more residents) as measured by violent crimes per 1,000 people annually.  Eight of the Top 100 are from California.  The national average of violent crimes is 3.86 per 1,000 people annually.  The position, city and # of crimes per 1,000 are listed below:
#100, Madera (9.19)
#83, Desert Hot Springs (9.96)
#74, San Bernardino (10.3)
#67, Richmond (10.52)
#43, East Palo Alto (12.08)
#40, Stockton (12.42)
#32, Compton (12.87)
#5, Oakland (19.94)
#3, Detroit (21.10)
#1, Camden (25.66)

I included Detroit because I just moved there.  Pretty interesting, in a Mad-Max kind of way.  Heard a long series of popping noises the other night driving home on East Jefferson, which connects downtown Detroit to Grosse Pointe.  There's about an eight mile stretch of sketchy area, almost unbelievable to behold.

Since California has around 12% of the US population, I'd say that they're underperforming in terms of violent cities.

Is Oakland #2, as per the title, or #5, as per the list?

Anyway, as someone who owns a home in Oakland I'm definitely banking on that going down, though I think it's concentrated pretty far from where I am.

The City better pray the drought doesn't extend two more years.  No more water from the hetch hetchy river (or whatever it is) and the reservoir only has water for two years.  More than 50% of the City's drinking water.  I hope the smelt erect a memorial to us when we're gone.

Mick, what moved you to Detroit? I was born there, and although we moved when I was in the third grade, I've got tons of family on both sides still there, so I'm back from time to time, most recently this past April. It's funny; the older I get, the more important it is to get back there...

Oddly enough, I got a great job offer with some pretty good upside.  I live in Grosse Pointe Farms, work in downtown Detroit, and I'm enjoying the heck out of it.

I grew up in the Central Valley and fully expected Fresno to make that list.  Interestingly Fresno does not make an appearance while Stockton and Madera show up as #40 and #100 respectively.  I've heard Fresno has cleaned up a little bit after making a run at California's murder capitol during the height of the gang violence and drug wars when it tended to be territory disputed by both Northern and Southern gangs. 

There's no glory in our state taking up 8% of the top 100 spots on this list even if California makes up approximately 11% of the total US population.

This happens with some regularity. I hear about something similar every few months. It almost makes you wonder if some idiots consider it funny to rob them.

Two Downtown suggestions if you haven't tried them already:
1. Roasting Plant Coffee. Cool shop, great coffee.
2. The original Tiger Stadium site at the corner of Michigan and Trumbull. (A short walk from downtown.) If you're a baseball fan, there's a lot of history there.
