That keening screaming you hear - washingtonismoney - 06-01-2015

Is a horde of east coast alumni after seeing the start times for games:

The schedule of tv games as announced to date - http://pac-12.com/article/2015/06/01/pac-12-early-football-television-schedule-announced

start times announced for some football games - 82lsju - 06-01-2015

Sat Sept 12 vs UCF 7:30pm
Sat Sept 19 @USC 5:00pm
Fri Sept 25 @OSU 7:00pm
Thur Oct 15 vs UCLA @7:30pm

I am so not excited about a 7:30pm kick-off on a Thursday night

Re: That keening screaming you hear - Papa John - 06-01-2015

I'm a little surprised that the UCLA game is starting so late. Must be the latter half of an east-west doubleheader.

Re: That keening screaming you hear - BostonCard - 06-01-2015

Thursday night game.  Given that it is a Thursday game, better a 7:30 start than a 5 PM start, which is not good for people who work and are trying to get to the game (not like TV cares about us, though).

Sign that contract, and then screw over the viewers and advertisers!  What a game plan.  I wonder if the advertisers can take out insurance against disastrous CFB game scheduling.

Re: That keening screaming you hear - jacketree - 06-01-2015

Not so disastrous for advertisers, really.  Rather than having all the games at great times for those in the stadium (all bunched up across numerous carriers/channels), they'd prefer them spread out with more eyeballs on each game.

Honestly I don't know how y'all manage back east.  No game starts until noon and the west coast night games end at 2 a.m.  Here you can wake up to Gameday, start watching real games at 9  and go non-stop until about 11 p.m.  Then stay up watching highlights or replays. Perfect football Saturday.

Exactly. When I tell friends I could never live in the East...this is why. Of course there are several other reasons but this is my favorite.

Re: That keening screaming you hear - Ronnietrader - 06-01-2015

Although I am in NJ, I don't mind the late kickoffs as all the kiddies get to sleep in the house, so it allows me to focus on what's really important.  Like the fact that UCF should be sleepwalking when they kick off against us at 10:30 PM their time.

(American) sports life is so far superior on the West Coast that it's a major pro. However, if you like any sports with events in the Old World, East Coast becomes more tolerable.

Better than a 6pm kickoff on a Thursday night

Yep, there's a reason pretty much every NBA and NHL game starts at 7 or 7:30 local time.  That is not an unusual start time for anyone who watches any sports other than college football.

Re: That keening screaming you hear - Renaissance Man - 06-02-2015

For those attending the games, I am sure I heard a mass sigh of relief upon seeing no early season middle of the day games in the wok.

Re: That keening screaming you hear - Papa John - 06-02-2015

When I expressed my surprise at the 7:30 pm UCLA game start, I wasn't expressing disappointment. I live in California, so 7:30 pm is great for me. My son's asleep by 8:30 pm, so I have the  whole second half to myself.

I was just surprised that it wasn't a 6 pm start, which used to be the kickoff times for most (all?) Thursday ESPN games in the not-too-distant past.

Re: That keening screaming you hear - fullmetal - 06-02-2015

I forecast a decrease in the attendance numbers for alumni game watching parties...but I'd love to be wrong.

Having all but the UCF game be in October/November helps there too.

No complaints from me - Redrum - 06-02-2015

More games accessible is more games I get to see.  I'm all in.  That's what coffee is for.  Best time in two decades of Stanford watching from afar came at  11 p.m. or so watching the end of Harbaugh vs. the Toejams in the Coliseum.  Not much in life better than jumping up and down in your living room knowing that the same dance is being done all over America.  I gladly stay up for anything that comes even remotely close.

I liked all of them. I loved a few of them actually.  September games at night are just better for Stanford Stadium and the warmer climate Pac-12 stadiums.

9/12 - UCF probably will not struggle with the late start, but it won't help them.  This is the closest thing we can do that compares with those Noon Eastern start times that hurt the West Coast teams so much.

USC @5PM means prime time on the East Coast.  It will be hot in SoCal at that time of year, so later is better.  Not sure that is a problem.  In SoCal most families have Saturdays filled with youth activities, but 5PM is late enough that families can go to those events and the game.  Should be a great environment, with cooling temperatures.

The Friday time is always later, 7PM is "only" 10PM on a Friday night on the east coast.  East Coast baseball fans routinely watch their teams play at 10:30PM.  It is part of the deal.  I doubt many will watch the game outside of the Pacific-12 markets, so prime time on the west coast is fine.

The best time announcement was the 7:30PM for Thursday.  A 5PM game runs the extreme risk of empty stands, but most people around the USA would understand how that could happen. 6PM probably is the worst.  At many places 6PM should enable time to leave work at 5PM and still get to the venue.  The Bay Area is not one of those places, and the empty stands look bad with comments about apathetic fans or whatever.  7:30PM is more similar to the traditional basketball start times, so I suspect most fans can get to the venue for the kickoff.  I hope all of the Pac-12 Thursday games use that same time slot since 5 & 6 PM are hard for USC, UCLA, UCB and Stanford for traffic and/or campus parking reasons.

Ohhh...OK. I see the problem here - Redrum - 06-03-2015

Farm 93 was applying Stanford logic (excuses) to U S C game fans.  We are habituated to using the Kids Soccer Excuse to explain our low-to-middling game attendance and we figure every school operates the same way.  History has shown the Trojan fans just don't operate on those principles.  All over SoCal there are kids standing around in athletic field parking lots and standing by the side of the road as it gets dark.  They are waiting until the U SC game ends and their parents finally come to pick them up.
