A bit OT: IMG Academy -
TrumpCard - 03-29-2015
IMG is known as a factory in a number of sports, especially tennis, and it just started fielding a football team in 2013. Apparently, it is already becoming a juggernaut. IMG boasts 5 of the top 50 players and 8 of the top 200 players in the composite ratings on 247sports.
Is it feasible for Stanford to recruit students at IMG or is the program there incompatible with Stanford admissions. For example, are there AP classes offered?

I would assume AP classes are offered. However, even if they aren't Florida has certified high school AP online courses through the Florida Virtual School (FLVS) that students can take.

Dwight Powell went there. Case closed.

Still ..... An academy purpose built for sports excellence is probably not a place with an equal emphasis on academic excellence. To raise two questions, I wonder what kind of academic faculty IMG attracts? How would the classroom dynamics support, say, an AP class discussion in AP English Literature and Composition or US Government and Politics?
There's a reason Stanford mainstreams athletes and the general population, right?Â
All of which is to say I suspect Dwight Powell my have been an exception.Â

We've had multiple tennis players over the years that have gone to IMG-type academies for high school. There are multiple avenues for athletes at these schools that want to pursue rigorous academic schedules. They can take online correspondence courses and in some cases the academy can even arrange for them to be bused to another more traditional school that offers more courses.

Thanks for the feedback, Publius and StanfordMatt. The folks who go out of their way to pursue AP correspondence courses or bus to other academies must be specially driven people indeed.Â
I'm guessing it's important for our coaches and the athletes to identify Stanford as a target school early on and then pursue a less-traveled path by the end of their sophomore year. Does that sound about right?
