You will not BELIEVE who's claiming 40 year decision! - yvonne - 03-27-2015

Yes, Miami, of all places is claiming it's the best 40 year decision.

The 40 year decision for a Hurricane football player: should I take the plea or risk 40 to life?

BTW don't get too excited about the block S helmet wallpaper background for Mike Williams Twitter page. At first I had a Keller Chryst deja vu and then I realized it might be his high school football team's helmet.  It is.  A nice coincidence nonetheless if Uncle Julio here comes to The Farm.

ROFL on the first part!

On the second part, maybe this is why the new football helmet logo has a tree in it?  Dunno, but I'm old school and I still like the block S better

They are going to regret that just for the jokes.

I like the clickbait headline yvonne.

When and where did the "40 year decision" start?

You're in trouble now, Yvonne. Weather Channel is pissed off - Redrum - 03-28-2015

Every third story linked on Weather Channel website front page is titled:  YOU WON'T BELIEVE (fill in rest of headline or picture  here).  It's a meme.  YOU WON'T BELIEVE what they found in this cave.  YOU WON'T BELIEVE what made THIS (photo)  YOU WON'T BELIEVE what came up in this fishing net! (photo)...  and now Yvonne is plagiarizing.  Lawyers to follow.

Actually I think they have cleaned up their act a little at Miami in recent years but old stereotypes die hard.

Speaking of old stereotypes dying hard, did anyone see the article on Costello's commitment where the author claims Costello had to make a choice between a world class education and playing "championship" football. Four BCS bowl games out of five years and the guy still thinks we are a lightweight football team.

It has become a pet peeve of mine.  It's like every single item on my Facebook feed is someone posting about some unbelievable item.  It bothers me because people are employing psychologists to manipulate people into clicking on articles (same with so-called freemium games, where the goal is to separate people from real money to gain virtual goods).

http://blog.hootsuite.com/the-strange-science-of-click-bait/

Quote:The secret, Eric Jaffe writes in Fast Company, is “engineering ‘curiosity gap’ headlines.” He cites George Loewenstein of Carnegie Mellon as the leading proponent of the “information gap” theory of curiosity. In the mid-1990s, Loewenstein wrote that “the curious individual is motivated to obtain the missing information to reduce or eliminate the feeling of deprivation.” If you feel like click bait is a little like content junk food, you’re on to something. Jaffe explains that, just as fast food chains have figured out just the right compound of chemistry and marketing to provoke hunger for products we know we don’t need, some headline writers have figured out exactly what makes us feel like we need the information on the other side of a link.

These psychological tricks only work temporarily and the purveyors shuffle around a ton. One day it's Upworthy, the next it's whatever. Same for the headline types.

OK, I'm sorry, but I really couldn't believe that Miami had the audacity to claim it's the best 40-year decision for a young man. Stanford, the UCs, Michigan, Virginia, Texas, even SC. I have to pretty far down my list before I get to Miami.

My impression is that every place is claiming that choosing them is a 40-year decision.

The University of Miami itself is at least an okay university. It's a borderline research school, ranked by the always reliable USNWR at #48 national university. That's one spot behind UW-Madison, and tied with Penn State, UW (Washington version) and ahead of Univ Texas and Ohio State. Now those particular relative rankings seem a little preposterous to me (reflecting that the USNWR criteria over-rate privates) - but there is still something to U. Miami.

The football team, on the other hand, probably has even less connections to the overall university than most, and had very well documented troubles. Like all offenders, they claim things are much better now under the current coach - I don't know the truth of that claim. In fact that is the problem broadly; most of the universities loosely attached to the top level football teams are fine, it's that the football players tend not to experience much of the actual university.

Your comments remind me of a newspaper article I saw when Glynn Milburn transferred to Stanford from Oklahoma back what, 1989 or 1990 -- if I remember correctly, at OU he had to live in a football dorm, which he didn't want, and his teammates were incredulous that he actually wanted to go to class...

Southern California hasn't won a conference championship since 2008.

Michigan hasn't won a conference championship since 2004.

Stanford has won two of the last three conference championships.

So which school plays "championship" football?

It's hard to say, but the first time I remember hearing it was from Lou Holtz, when he disparaged Florida State's Scott Bently for eschewing a Notre Dame scholarship offer coming out of Overland High School (Aurora, Colorado). 'Son, you haven't just made a four-year mistake, you have made a forty-year mistake.' Words to that effect.  This would be circa 1992-93, about the same time Holtz bagged on Justin Armour for wanting to only win 4 games a year by selecting Stanford over the Irish. Something about those Colorado guys....

Bently might have been one of the "wide left" or "wide right" kickers for FSU (perhaps JPRI remembers), but I do remember that he hit the game winning field goal giving the 'Noles an Orange Bowl win over Nebraska and the National Title. Notre Dame has won exactly zero national titles since Holtz dropped that line on him.

As for Armour, he (and Stanford) did only win 4 games in 1993.  He also won 8 games in '91, 10 in '92 (including ND), and 3 in '94.

You can argue about statistical significance of sites like payscale.com.  But the fact remains that Stanford is#7 on the list, and Miami is #619.  No matter what you say, that's a pretty significant gap.

Perhaps we should start calling it the seventy-year decision.
