Directors' Cup 2015 - BigEasyCard - 03-26-2015

With the first D1 Winter standings released, Stanford continues to lead the Directors' Cup with 615.5 points, followed by UCLA with 548.  UCLA has improved dramatically over their performance through the same release last year when they stood at 272 versus our 596.

Here's a link: http://www.nacda.com/directorscup/nacda-directorscup-current-scoring.html

My unofficial tally of all sports completed for Stanford to date has our Cup total at 862.50 which is 66 points behind our total for the same sports last year.  The 21st Cup for Stanford may not be this year.

Nevertheless, Geaux Cardinal!

I have a feeling this is the year it goes elsewhere. We have done worse in just about every sport this year.

I share the concern.

Two largest improvements this year are W Field Hockey up 60 and M Cross Country up 35.  Two largest point declines are M Basketball and M Indoor T&F, both down to 0 from about 64 each last year.

We saw last year how every point matters.

I want to win every award Stanford competes for BUT it might be the best thing for the Director's cup if Stanford loses.

The publicity around the award will go from nonexistent to substantial and a rivalry will be set up between us and the incumbent that will be followed the following year.  The Cup could go from "that Stanford award" to something several campuses in contention track throughout the year.  It could become a rallying point around campus to renew emphasis on sports where our performance has fallen off.

Just saying'.....

I'd be willing to lose the cup if it forces Muir to finally take action, starting with a new MBB coach.  And if we lose the cup and he's still content to play his fiddle, I hope it forces someone above Muir to take action.

The Cup winner will be decided long after men's basketball season is over. Muir will make his decision right after basketball season ends. However, given his previous decisions, I'd say that the team's having made it to Madison Square Garden will solidify his desire to keep Dawkins.

Not only is our streak of Directors Cup victories in jeopardy, but our streak of winning a team national championship has a good chance of ending.  Women's water polo is our best hope of keeping that streak alive with women's tennis a possibility (unless I am missing another spring sport that we are exceptionally strong at this year)

Dawkins' team contributed no points this year compared to 64 last year.  Shaw's contributed 45 this year compared to 67 last year.

When every point matters, I think the key criterion is how well each team did relative to its potential.  And that provides fuel for lively civilized debate here.

I'm still pulling for women's rowing.  They had an awesome showing in the A/B semifinals of all three boat classes last year (winning all three, tightly contested) before having a rough series of grand final races (2nd in the V4+ by 1.3sec, 4th in the 2V8+ by 5.4sec, and 6th/last in the V8+ by 8.5sec, all times off of first place).  They placed 4th in team standings behind Ohio State (winners), Cal, and Brown.

Re: Directors' Cup 2015 - CornFed - 03-26-2015

Well, it's a pretty big fantasy scenario, but men's golf could conceivably (at least in my conception) win a championship, if all the forces align.  We have a very young team (downside and upside) of exceptional players each of whom has demonstrated they can go very low.  They need to get into the finals and then get even hotter.  Sure I know.  It's a little like Steve Martin's line about making a million dollars and not paying any taxes.  Also, many teams in the NCAA are comprised of elite players all of whom are just as capable of lighting it up.  But the same format that yanked a potential championship out of our hands last year, might be a blessing this year.  Just sayin'.  Do you believe in karma?
