I am not GaryT, but I played one on (not) TV several times - so I second the birthday wishes.
[For years after The Play, everywhere the band went people wanted to "meet the trombone player", which strangely enough often got turned into wanting to "meet the tuba player". While GaryT was a mainstay at LSJUMB events, he didn't quite make everything. Given the odd transposition to "tuba player", and the amusing fact that so many couldn't seem to tell the difference between the two - I got drafted to "play" Gary at many a band rally. I might even have forged his autograph a few times (though it was likely a not-very legible "Edward M. Beaux" that was actually signed). ]

Happy Birthday, Gary.
The one, the only, the truly incomparable. And kudos to you for being in the minority of LSJUMBers on the Screw of '82 that was NOT on the field of play (well, at least, not on any part that mattered). You were just minding your own business in the back of the end zone when some cheating dog came slamming into you. What was up with that?

Thanks for the kind wishes, all. (And, Garvin, it is true that I rarely leave Berkeley thirsty...)

GaryT is the only person on this board (and that includes me) who was mounted on the wall in my late father-in-law's den. Unless Teejers or CTCard or some others are in a particular picture.....
Here is an interesting perspective 20 years out, which is now 13 years old:
https://alumni.stanford.edu/get/page/magazine/article/?article_id=37765
(If Gary could tackle, he would have been penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct 8 yards into the end zone, right?)
NB: At the time, I thought it was hilarious. First saw the Play on a Sunday morning highlight show the day after on the way to my room through the TV lounge after a post-midnight run back from Winston-Salem fueled by Dixie (beer) and Krispy Kreme after a particularly successful (blowout) Wake Forest Roady. We used our band for frisbee target practice, so nice to see someone take it up a notch.

jacketree, thanks for the post. According to the linked article, "They have developed successful careers and matured into middle age..." - matured into middle age 13 years ago? Ouch.Â
I was so much older then; I'm younger than that now.

Happy birthday, Gary, and many happy returns to the real star of the '82 Big Game!

But I am a little disturbed that Gary was.

I see what you did there.

I thought John Elway was the star of that Big Game.

The referees beg to differ.

I thought it was Mark Harmon.
And just to be extremely clear,
this is what remains mounted on that den wall. Fess up, who else is in this picture? And with respect to the other famous picture (on same wall), who is the saxophonist (?) about to be demolished? Guess he got out of the way in time?
To be fair, the distaff side of my family would love to replace those things with pictures of a half blue and gold Rose Bowl Field. College football may be dead before that happens.

Kevin Moen. I shy away from buying that brand of shower head to this day. I have no idea whether they're related.

I have looked at those two pictures a lot trying to figure out how they fit together. It's a little tricky, but if you look carefully at the video you can sort it out.
Video:

The guy who must have taken the still picture at the bottom is the guy in blue jacket in the video. He's standing just about beside Gary, which is why Gary is not in the frame of that picture. The saxophonist (whose face I cannot make out in that picture - so I am not certain who it was) does get out of the way and off to the side.
I'm in the video if you pause it about 30 seconds, just after Gary gets smushed - standing on the dashed line just behind the end zone (with a dark colored sousaphone), but I am not in the still you posted.

An ex-college roommate of mine who sometimes posts here as HisKneeWasDown is in the video (and, unlike GaryT, he IS on the playing field side of the goal line.)  Sorry to out you, HKWD. /Lefty

I don't know if this (still) is a rule, but in a book I had as a kid about famous strange plays in football, there was an example of a player jumping off the bench in the middle of a play, running onto the field, and tackling an opposing ball carrier. The ball carrier was awarded a touchdown.

It's called a Palpably Unfair Act:

I believe in the NFL you can only award up to a TD, but that varies by league. I'm not sure what the rule is for the NCAA.

If I remember correctly, and it is very possible that I do not, the head official was relieved to learn that Moen had actually scored. Since the band was interfering with play, they could have awarded a touchdown had he not scored. Saved them from that particular judgment call, anyway.

My memory tells me (a demonstrably unreliable source) that the play you described involved a Texas A&M player leaving the bench to tackle a runner who had broken clear and was headed for a touchdown. It is where they get their "Twelfth Man" ritual and tradition. Could google it, but don't want to erode my confidence in my memory any further. :-[
*Sure enough. I did google it and the tradition of the Twelfth Man is nothing of the sort that I described. So now I am curious to find the play in question. I am certain that I saw a video replay of that amazing mistake. If it wasn't Texas A&M, does anyone know who it was?
**Okay. I am demonstrating to myself the benefits of checking google before I say the stuff I say. It was the 1954 Cotton Bowl between Rice and Alabama. Tommy Lewis of Alabama (those cheating dogs) came off the bench to make a tackle. Rice was awarded a touchdown by the officials and Rice went on to win 28-6. If anyone is even remotely interested, the story is at this link:
