The Turley Method -

Fun look at the strength and conditioning regimen under Turley. A few interesting tidbits - S Thomas has put on 23 pounds (which I would think would take him up to the 275 range), H Phillips looks a lot bigger than he did last year, and A Shittu isn't wearing a knee brace while working out. All good signs! :)

All good news. I wonder when Scarlett joined (or will join) these workouts. kal's commencement is in 2 months, so I would hope that is the outside date. He needs to get from 265 to 275+ as well, both at Stanford and at the next level (if he gets there).Â

What is Mr. Turley's annual salary? How many Fields medalists could we hire to coach our putative undergraduate rocket scientiists if he were to leave?

By NCAA rule, no athlete can participate in athletics activities until he's enrolled as a student, or in the vacation period prior to enrollment. Assuming Scarlett is graduating from C.al in May and enrolling at Stanford in the fall, he can't participate with Stanford's football program until summer.

At least in theory, Turley pays for himself because, if Turley were to leave, the football team would win fewer games and make less money. I don't know whether Fields medalists pay for themselves, but I would not be surprised if many science and engineering profs do pay for themselves via research grants and patents. The real question is how many poet laureates Stanford could hire instead of the gymnastics coach. Coaches in non-revenue sport and profs in the humanities and social sciences are the loss leaders.

You mean in what we used to call "education"?
