Why are we playing zone?

Chicard, every team that has beaten Utah this year has played a tight zone. It bixes up Poeltl and forces Utah to shoot from the outside. Sometimes it works, lately as far as Utah is concerned it hasn't.

We are up 5 and out rebounding the Utes 2:1 at the half

Is it just me or are Bill Walton and his broadcast partner (his name escapes me) on the verge of actually getting into an on-air fight in the middle of the game?

Thanks. I guess it's working? At one point they seemed to be shredding it with crisp passing leading to wide open looks. They're still shooting 50% -- our rebound edge has been the difference.

Well, we were up 39-34 at the half, but Utah opened on a 10-2 run and we are now down 44-41.
Nastic with his 4th foul with 16 min to go. Randle and Marcus Allen each have 3.

Is Utah a future #1 seed? I guess Stanford just wants to make sure they conference's NCAA tournament bound teams get quality seeds because Stanford is making Utah look GREAT.
Sad to know that teams in that 5-7 seed range are completely out of reach of a JD squad.
Did we at least get some type of loyalty discount with JD's current contract?Â

would say the strategy going forward is to let the seniors lay on their shields and only play underclassmen for whatever remains in the season.

If you did not stay until the end of the broadcast (completely understandable), you missed this

Wow, what a disastrous second half for Stanford. Oh well, it would be nice if Stanford had a couple of home games in the NIT for the seniors' last hurrah. In spite of my strong reservations about the team's future with Johnny Dawkins as head coach, I am always grateful for the efforts of the players, in the classroom and on the court.

Watching the end of the game was a waste of an hour. Winflop was prescient with his question regarding how well Brown would play after playing the entire UW game. Brown didn't show up and when he did, it was a poor entry pass for a turnover or a missed box out. The three seniors are tired after too many minutes. Sorry to see them go out that way.Â
Dawkins must go and I think Muir truly knows it, but I don't see him acting based on his respect for the player and not the coach. Even my Duke friends admit he's not the right guy. What was the offensive strategy last night? Everyone on our team was waiting for Chasson to create something every time and the entire arena knew it. Sad. I won't be buying NIT tickets, but my hope is that the underclassmen get most of the playing time. We need to change our player development.  Oh, how the mighty trees have fallen.... 7 years and one NCAA appearance to show for it. What did our run look like before that?

I'm sure I'm missing something here, but wouldn't this be along the lines of the last thing the seniors would want? Risking injury and requiring a big effort at the end of a long season with a sadly desultory ending, in order to win a minor postseason tournament that they have already won a couple years ago, is scant motivation. The time to make a statement was in the second half Thursday night in Las Vegas. And I guess they did.

Last night was hapless and hopeless. I told RJ I would be shocked if Stanford kept it within 10 and I wasn't shocked at all. However, I was proud of the players for playing the first half with everything they had. They simply ran out of gas, and nothing that they or Dawkins could have done would have changed the outcome.
Not that I'm making excuses. Rather, that Stanford was in the situation it was in last night - tired, injured, and outmanned at almost every position - is 100% Dawkins' fault. He has failed to recruit & develop enough talent to have the bench depth that is needed to compete at the level Utah & Arizona are playing - it;s not even close. This results in thin benches that have two big impacts:
- Starters play too many minutes and wear down over time. Randle & Brown in the last 10 games were not the same players, not even close
- Injuries have a much bigger impact because there are fewer players who can fill in. I don't know if Stanford's injury rate is materially higher than NCAA averages, but it does seem that at least one player is always hurt and the impact is greater than on most teams especially those going to the big dance.
Layer in the highly questionable coaching and playcalling decisions, along with the gross inconsistency of the last several seasons, and you have the recipe for a mediocre basketball program.
Stanford MBB desperately needs new leadership.
