Re: Women's basketball and recruiting - TheFarm07 - 03-05-2015

From the article:

Quote:"A lot has been made of football coaches working with admissions to upgrade recruits without sacrificing academics.

But the women's basketball team remains held to Stanford's rigid acceptance standards. Cardinal coaches can only consider about five of the top 100 high school players, VanDerveer said. "

Is this implying that admissions lowers the standards for football players or that women's basketball players are held to a higher standard than other athletes?

Quote:"Kinnebrew, who sent Pac-12 player of the year Reshanda Gray to Cal,

said Stanford has gone overboard "for the sake of being the most selective school." "

Our admissions percentage has gone down, but it's due to more people applying, not a decrease in the number of people applying?

It sure sounds to me as if Football gets more flexibility than WBB in admissions.  This year's WBB frosh all had 4.0 gpas.  You can't really say that about football.

I wonder if that is a function of the admissions office putting its foot down or a decision made by Van Derveer?

Re: Women's basketball and recruiting - BobK - 03-05-2015

Why is this news?  15 of the last 18 WBB at Stanford had 4.0 or better. I couldn't find GPAs for the other 3.  Of course FB gets breaks they support most other sports. We need this and thankfully we get it. The hiring of Bowlsby and Dean Shaw made this happen.

For most athletes it's very hard to get accepted.  This is a problem for all sports and even in FB

We've chatted about this before, Bob.  Are you sure that standards for WBB have not gotten tougher?  Perhaps simply as a result of overall standards going up?  If overall acceptance has fallen from 10% to 5% in the last decade, how does that affect non-football athletes?

How do we do so well in WVB? Less competition? Has the recent past just been a random upswing where by chance the number of great players with great academics has been higher than usual?
