He sounded pretty sanguine about the defense. It's good to hear Solly T's injury isn't serious.

Interesting that Shaw does not want to talk much about the Burns/Chryst competition to see who will be Hogan's backup/successor. About all he will say is they are both young, talented and still learning the playbook (since Burns will be entering his third year this fall, this comment is soon going to sound a little silly). Suspect that he wants to keep both of them motivated and of course the last thing he wants given our current QB situation is for one of them to get discouraged and take his act elsewhere.

Anyway here's the skinny from SF Gate. Can't say that I find it encouraging that Burns is still having problems with taking snaps from center.

Let's be real.  Burns isn't ever going to be the starter unless Chryst is injured.  Burns is too tentative, too mechanical, and if he doesn't know the playbook after three years, well, the writing is on the wall.

This fall should be interesting to see how much Hogan comes out and who goes in to replace him when he does. Knowing how Shaw operates, it wouldn't shock me if he tried to defer the decision on the two until the fall of 2016.

I have to wonder about this.  he didn't suck in high school, he was pretty darned good.  What happened so that he now can't take a snap?

Mick - the article said that Burns still has problems occasionally when he has to take a snap from under center.  He was in the shotgun for his entire high school career and just does not have much experience under center.  The biggest adjustment is probably reading defenses and calling audibles and then integrating those mental processes into the mechanics of taking the snap and running the play.  One would think that a lot of practice repetition would overcome a prior lack of experience.  But the learning seems to be coming slowly.

Burns in high school ran a run-oriented offense.  He was not expected to be a drop-back QB.

Got it.  Then why did we rec...oh never mind.

Re: Anyone at Spring Practice? - BostonCard - 03-02-2015

Just to clarify, he wasn't expected to be a drop-back QB in high school.  But he showed size, athleticism and a good arm, so we were hoping that he would be a diamond in the rough, and that with some time in the system, he would learn the skills needed to be an effective drop-back QB.  So far, we haven't seen it, and we may never.  But it is reasonable to expect his trajectory in college to be slower compared to someone who played in a pass-oriented offense in high school.

I forgot spring practice was going on.  I'm leaving the Bay Area tomorrow morning, sigh.

Maybe your return trip will be during the second portion.
