What is up with the blue and black jersey on the left?

As long as it doesn't look blue and gold to anyone...

Re: Still not a fan of the tree - ThePassionOfTheChryst - 02-27-2015

Is there not going to be a white helmet?  Or is it just not pictured?

I like the tree in the S though, I noticed it at the FF Bowl and wondered if it was a debut.

Re: Still not a fan of the tree - yvonne - 02-27-2015

The white helmet will be the one used during the bowl. The Block S will have the tree inside.

Re: Still not a fan of the tree - terry - 02-28-2015

There's still a white helmet.

Maybe I'm just old-fashioned, but I greatly prefer the block S.  The jersey's dont seem that different to me, or am i missing something?

Re: Still not a fan of the tree - ThePassionOfTheChryst - 02-28-2015

Thanks Yvonne, terry.  I'm glad the white is still the primary.  The black helmet is slick but only once a year or so.

I like the tree because it sets our block S apart from NC State, Syracuse, and maybe others that use a red(dish) block s as their primary logo.  I know Cuse is orange but at a quick glance I always have to do a double take.

As for the new unis, the changes seem to be primarily in the construction.  It appears to be a different jersey technology.  However, at first glance the big cosmetic changes I see are the wordmark inside the collar, the new logo on the neck, and the logo on the side of the pants.  For Shaw, those are wholesale changes.  Also, the black jersey is pretty clearly different.  I think the black jersey has been greatly improved.

Honestly the cardinal and white jerseys look a little more like Bama to me now, I'm not sure why.

On second thought, it seems strange to introduce the black get up with the others.  Could this mean that the black components could become a more regular part of the rotation?

You guys do realize that Little Stevie Wonder isn't really blind.  It's a marketing gimmick that go out of hand that he has had to maintain.

Well the black jerseys now have red numbers instead of white.  But iirc Shaw has said the team gets to pick one game a year to wear them and that's it.

I hear ya on the distinction but I still prefer the block S even if it looks similar to others.  We don't really need to reinforce the tree thing any more than is being done already.

Re: Still not a fan of the tree - ChicagoCard - 03-01-2015

I thought the tree was merely the band's mascot. Obviously that's the specific band member in the tree outfit. Still, I need to find a review of all the Stanford associated nicknames / mascots, etc -- Indians, Cardinal, Tree.

P.s. besides the small Tree / block S on the pants, I hope they are sticking with plain white without stripes on the sides.

Re: Still not a fan of the tree - winflop - 03-01-2015

The tree is also part of the school's official logo

I hear you - but it's only us that makes that distinction these days.  To most of the world the Tree IS the Stanford mascot and saying otherwise is just a quaint idiosyncrasy.  I'm starting to roll with it and choose to treat the Tree as an early and particularly successful "viral marketing campaign" by LSJUMB.

Time to embrace the Tree!

I like the tree in general. But I think it makes the logo look bad, and I can't put my finger on why.

The title you gave to this thread certainly does not carry that in general sentiment - but I had guessed that was your intent.

I think there are two whys (at least for me).
It looks cluttered, and therefore just a mess from far away.
It looks too much like a dollar sign - which is hitting too close to home.

The tree over the block S is reminiscent of $. Even so I like it. I would also like to see mixed uniforms, such as black pants with red jerseys. These deviations from tradition should only done when Stanford is a clear favorite though. If Stanford were to lose, then people would make an irrational connection with the uniforms. This would be of an exceedingly H.U-G.E. proportions mistake.

Re: Still not a fan of the tree - CornFed - 03-01-2015

I had completely missed the dollar sign effect (duuuhhhhh!).  Now I can't NOT see it.  Oh well.

Maybe we could return to our roots and embrace the name for the team that actually won - Robber Barons!!!  We could license the logo man from Monopoly for our mascot.  The band would have the Tree and the teams would have the Monopoly man.  And during each athletic event he could exploit the Tree throughout the game and we would all be wildly entertained.

Re: Still not a fan of the tree - fullmetal - 03-01-2015

I always preferred the separation that the tree (or lack thereof) afforded the university from the athletic department. But that comes from years of familiarity with the clean Block S.

Stanford has used the black jersey for one regular season game each year starting in 2010 (as well as the Pac-12 championship game in 2012). So it's already a regular thing.
