MBB: February is the cruelest month? - Papa John - 02-12-2015

With apologies to T. S. Eliot, of course.

Johnny Dawkins record at Stanford in Februrary:
2009: 3-4
2010: 3-5
2011: 3-5
2012: 4-4
2013: 3-5
2014: 5-2
2015: 1-1 so far
Total: 22-26

So what will the rest of February 2015 bring? The Stanford men are at Utah tonight (6 pm, Pac-12 Network) and at Colorado on Sunday. The month concludes with home games versus C.al and OSU. I've given up on expectations for this team, but I'm hoping for at least 3-1.

Not sure if February is the cruelest month ... or if Dawkins simply hasn't had many good teams. Dawkins is .458 in February and .474 in conference games over his career. Probably not statistically significant, right?

I think you would want to compare the February results to the non-February results, or maybe that's what you did.

Statistically significant? I have no idea, but I'm talking about the emotional impact when--last year excluded, of course--any vestigial flicker of hope that Stanford will make the NCAA tournament vanishes like the dew on the taro leaves, licked up by the morning sun.

Sort of. Dawkins's overall record is much better, but that's presumably inflated by nonconference games. So I think the conference record is probably the most accurate comparison.

Stanford will be without Rosco Allen tonight, sidelined indefinitely with a back injury. Allen (16 starts) averaging 8.8 ppg and 5.0 rpg.

Whether it's lack of personnel, scheme, coaching - Dawkins is accountable for it.  He brought all these kids in, he taught them, and he's the guy making the calls from the sidelines.

Looks like the team is hanging in there at half, but Nasty Humphrey and Travis all have two fouls.  Can they not play a little more zone and protect these guys a little more?  And is Rosco out tonight?

Sadly, a 16 point loss for the Cardinal on the road against #11 Utah.

I suspect this is a loss Stanford can recover from although a win would have given the team breathing room.

They really need to finish the season 5-1 (1 being at AZ).  Oregon is the only semi-quality team left before the Pac-12 tourney.  They can't afford another bad loss or they are First Four at best.
