San Francisco's new offensive coordinator - BostonCard - 01-29-2015

None other than Keller Chryst's father, Geep (he had previously been QB coach).

Amazing how all the best coaches were already on the Niners' staff, just being held back by guys like Fangio and Harbaugh.  I'm calling 6-10 for 2015.

6-10 honestly seems optimistic to me. I wouldn't be surprised if they only won 4 games. The Rams and Cardinals are trending up and could be really hard to beat, plus they play the AFCN which is probably the hardest AFC division (with only 1 real patsy), and also the NFCN which has at least 2 very good teams, and they all might be strong. I look at that schedule and see exactly 1 team I expect to be a guaranteed W (the Browns), another 4-6 that are good chances depending on how the teams shake out (Bears, Vikings, Falcons, Giants, Rams x2) and then the rest probable losses.

So if you give them the W against the Browns, 50-50 against the 6 maybe teams, and then one upset they get to 5 wins. Sounds about right to me after gutting the coaching staff.

Re: San Francisco's new offensive coordinator - Mick - 01-30-2015

Agree with Stupac.  This is a slow-motion train wreck happening.  Literally every single decision and announcement is bad, really bad.  Inexperienced coaches, #3 guys at #1 slots, #6 guys in #2 slots, and no one in #3 slots.  They can't get a great OC, they can't get a decent DC, the owner has proven he doesn't have a clue (just like Dad!) and the GM gets precisely what he wanted, milktoast everywhere and his job is safe and secure...he of the one-guy-remaining-from-the-2012 draft experience.

4-12 is my guess, with veterans retiring or sprinting for the door.  This will be bad enough that it will be a case study at mid-tier MBA schools.

Okay, now I'm depressed.  :(

I agree with the slow motion train wreck description but I'm a fan and I refuse to give up the hope that the coaches will be hidden gems who pull together and win despite their inept team ownership.  It feels hopeless but I just don't want to face it until I have absolutely no other options.
Cheers,
Pete F.

I'm going to say that 2014 was a fluke and they will be at least 11-5 in 2015

Spoken like a Ca.l fan :)

But seriously, it isn't an exaggeration to say nothing the Niners have done since they tried trading Harbaugh, has been a good move.  If you didn't know any better, you'd think the Yorks were selling the Niners short on some stock deal somewhere, destroying the team on purpose.  The only thing on par with this in sports that I can register is Charlie Finley gutting the A's in the 70's.  But he only did that to pay for his expensive divorce apparently.  The Yorks aren't hemorrhaging cash, quite the opposite.  Just a totally baffling situation.  Baalke apparently has all the power, but how and why?

Just hire Mike Holmgren as Team President and get the hell out of his way, Yorks.

Re: San Francisco's new offensive coordinator - CompSci87 - 01-30-2015

The front office power struggle aspect of it reminds me of Golden State under their previous ownership. Details are different in many ways, but GS recovered only after being sold to an owner who knew how to hire guys who were about winning on the court rather than power plays in the office.

Re: San Francisco's new offensive coordinator - rudruff - 01-30-2015

I just don't see how the long time owners ever sell these teams.

Raiders will win more games than the Farty Niners.  JedDork took daddy's keys to the Porsche and became the U-Boat Commander.

Still say they're tanking for a nice draft pick and a better coaching hire next year (perhaps the market will be better next year).

Re: San Francisco's new offensive coordinator - Leftcoast - 01-31-2015

It is as if the 49er management has taken a page out of Billy Beane's book.  Beane of the crossbay A's famously devalues experience and game management when hiring while looking for team managers who will implement his "Moneyball" strategies.

Except Baalke isn't as smart as Beane even if his ego is just as big.  (And even Beane doesn't bat 1.000 - witness this year's Cespedes trade.)

Except that baseball is far more player/talent driven in that the vast majority of "coaching" decisions are insignificant compared the player contribution. In football everything from game plan to scheme to play calling  is determined by the coaching staff. There was no significant talent gap between the Singletary 49ers and Harbaugh 49ers, and the coaching change alone led to a 7 win increase.

Ditto the Harbaugh-coached 2007 Stanford football team vs. the 2006 Harris-coached outfit.

Re: San Francisco's new offensive coordinator - Leftcoast - 01-31-2015

I agree with both comments.  I see parallels between the two GMs but flawed parallels in the 49ers case.  Coaching is more important in football and Baalke is no Beane.

What's the opposite of cautiously hopeful?  Perhaps ardently pessimistic?  That's me right now.

Re: San Francisco's new offensive coordinator - Nan3cy - 01-31-2015

I have the same feeling of doom for the 49ers now as I had for Stanford in 2002 when T.eevens' hire was announced. Same wan hope that I'm wrong, too...

Re: San Francisco's new offensive coordinator - OutsiderFan - 02-01-2015

And yet another coach hired who is being demoted - Clancy Pendergast.  Former NFL, Ca.l, and USC DC, now hired to be Inside LB coach.

The Niners have gone from having arguably the most respected and highest paid coaching staff in the NFL and a destination job for any football coach, to being one of the least respected, lowest paid coaching staff in the NFL, and a place no candidate with other options is considering.

The only analog to this is the Raiders after firing Gruden.  We all know how that turned out.
