The Shaw lexicon is a virus - washingtonismoney - 01-13-2015

And it has infected the Irwin family: https://stanford.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1724979

I see the word "phenomenal" used quite a bit in sports reporting, normally in quotes from players or coaches. I don't think Shaw is unique in using it frequently, but his frequency does seem to be rather high. It might not be, I don't pay much attention to most teams.

The lexicon that stands out more to me is the use of "we" for everything.  It's not just that "we" got into Stanford and "we" decided to attend Stanford.  It's even that "we" want to be treated like every other student.

However, I will cut the guy a break because he said a lot of good things about my alma mater.  And he's right that Stanford is vastly different from the competition.

My favorite part of the article: ""One of the things that I loved about Stanford is that I don't think I ever heard a negative thing out of any of their coaches," Craig said. "You didn't hear them go, well, 'Arizona State sucks.' There was no negative."

It is kind of odd that Trent's dad says something like "we're going to Stanford." I'm sure they're coming to Stanford for a number of Saturdays in the fall, but not sure what it means beyond that...

We make similar comments when "We beat Oregon in 2012 and 2013". I do not find the "we" thing odd. It happens when parents (or fans) are with their son (or team) shadowing every step they took.

Thumbs up to the Irwins!

Perhaps when Trent was in utero the Irwin's said "We are pregnant!" But you can ask Mila Kunis how she feels about that...

I think that seals it for me - Redrum - 01-14-2015

Some time in the coming year I'm going to allocate precious resources to re-subscribing to the Rivals site.  I dropped it a couple years ago, but Drukarev is the Shannon Turley of the symbiotic world of Stanford sports coverage.  A lot of the good stuff on the Bootleg is lifted from the Rivals site.  My only fear is last time I subscribed, not long after it went into its first (near)death-spiral.

My policy these days is just follow Andy.  He's the only guy that gets deep into Stanford specific recruiting stuff.  If Rivals collapses it's because he moves somewhere else.
