WBB: Bonnie Moving up 3 point list -
81alum - 01-13-2015
By my calculations, Bonnie is currently at 185 three point baskets made over her career--amazing considering how few games she has started and the limited time she has played. Here is the all-time chart as things stood at the beginning of the season with Bonnie's current spot inserted:
1. 295 Candice Wiggins 2004-08
2. 268 Jeanette Pohlen 2007-11
3. 210 Vanessa Nygaard 1993-98
4. 208 Kelley Suminski 2001-05
5. 205 Sebnem Kimyacioglu 2001-05
6. 201 Nicole Powell 2000-04
7. 192 Lindsey Yamasaki 1998-2002
8. 191 Jennifer Azzi 1986-90
BONNIE SAMUELSON 185
9. 179 Kate Starbird 1993-97
10. 178 Molly Goodenbour 1989-93
She just moved past Starbird and Goodenbour. Barring injury, it looks very likely that she will move past Azzi, Yamasaki, Kimyacioglu, Suminski, and Nygaard. I think it unlikely that she could catch Pohlen or Wiggins--two players who started and played a lot more minutes.
If there were statistics on treys per minute played, I imagine Bonnie would lead the three point list already.
There were no three pointers in women's basketball in Jennifer Azzi's freshman year, though, so there should be an asterisk next to her name--she probably would have made a lot more.

By the way, here is Drew Shiller's post-game interview with Bonnie after WSU:

While it is not an especially great interview, the video of her reaction after her last made trey did leave me chuckling. Listening to her discussion of the new offense simply confirms what we know. This is a matter-of-fact, sensible kid. The new offense was needed after the loss of Chiney. The new posts are getting better. And that is where it is at.

With today's 8 treys, Bonnie surpasses Nygaard and Suminski to take over third place all-time on the three pointer list. She won't be passing Jeanette or Candice--each of whom played many more minutes than Bonnie did. Bonnie's career percentage is .395, and is .450 for this year. Jamie Carey went .455 in 2000--before they moved the line back.
Given her place on the list, her percentage, the deeper line, and the limited minutes she had to make these achievements-- I think we can now say that Bonnie is the best pure three point shooter, over a four year career, that Stanford has ever had. (Azzi, however, had only 3 years, since there were no three point shots in wbb her freshman year. If we gave her another 25% she might be in third place.)
