MBB: Stanford 78 U$C 76 - StanFan88 - 01-11-2015
Another attempt to steal defeat from the jaws of victory falls short, mostly because the University of Seventh Choice is just not a good team.
Stanford was up by 13 with 9 mins left, and proceeded to make just one basket and two free throws after that. Six of the last seven shots were missed three-pointers, often less than 15 seconds into the possession. The only other possession was a 19-foot attempt by Brown with the shotclock at zero
The coaching was just awful. Dawkins needs to get in the players' grills about working the clock when you have a lead, and getting the ball inside to create space for uncontested outside shots or cutters to the basket. Instead they just passed it around the perimeter and jacked up a bunch of threes.
Bright spot was Rosco Allen who is really emerging as a quality player on both ends of the floor. If he can learn to finish at the basket he can be a 15+ scorer.

Get inside to whom? In the last 8 minutes of games Nastic usually has 4 fouls. So a perfect pass is needed. Without Travis not much inside late.
And yes 1 for 12 from three in the 2nd half makes your point valid except to whom?
We need to coach up Verhoeven and Humphreys offensively. And we haven't.

The best thing about last night's game was the comment by the announcers that Reid Travis should miss "about a month" in total. He's already been out for 2 weeks.
I'd go even further than StanFan88 on Rosco Allen: I think he has star potential as soon as next year. I'm assuming that Dawkins is keeping Rosco out of the starting lineup to bring him in as an energy guy, but I think this would be a much better team with him starting over Verhoeven. Also, I'd like to see Marcus Allen starting over Sanders. I love Allen's defense and speed.

I'm pessimistic on this one -- I'll bet that comment was just the announcers being sloppy. Travis was initially announced as being out "at least a month," with additional remarks suggesting that much longer was likely. The announcers may have just carelessly morphed "at least" to "about."

If trust the Stanford announcers as posted on another site. 2-3 weeks to go.Â

Stress fractures can occur in different gradations, and the healing time will vary accordingly. I had a "stress reaction" (sort of a precursor to a stress fracture) in my femur from running several years back and was only off of running for 3 weeks. But I've read other stories of femoral stress fractures that took many months to heal.
I still think the most positive news on Travis is that I haven't seen him on crutches yet. I think that a serious stress fracture of the femur would have you on crutches for a few weeks. Hopefully whatever he has is more minor.
The bigger picture is that we wouldn't be wasting time speculating about Travis if his absence hadn't exposed our lack of rebounding and interior defense.

Humphrey yes. Verhoeven is in his third year and is just as lost and slow-footed as when he showed up.

Both are foul machines. Hasn't anyone told them to challenge shots without trying to block every one?

Difference is Humphrey is a true frosh and he shows potential if he can be coached up and add some muscle. Verhoeven is in his third year on court, has shown very limited potential and has already added the muscle - and it hasn't helped.

With Humphrey, the problem (to me) looks like coordination -- does anyone know if he had a recent growth spurt? Because he looks like a player who hasn't quite figured out a new height.

Reminds me a bit of when Curtis Borchardt was a frosh. Could be he's still figuring out how to use his frame. But that's a sign that he can develop and improve.
