The big fall cleanup -
Hulk01 - 01-02-2015
There was a clear turnaround in the offense in the last five games of the season. The team played much cleaner: fewer penalties, turnovers, and sacks allowed.
As one piece of evidence, here are the current no penalty streaks for our front six:
Shuler: 11 games
Garnett:Â 8
Hooper:Â 8
Caspers:Â 7
Murphy: 5
And note that Cajuste was flagged three times in our first six games, but in no games since.
Our only front six players to be penalized in our final fives games were Cotton (1) and Andrus Peat (4, all in our final two games).
In our last three games, we had only nine bad offensive plays (sacks, turnovers, penalties). Thats fewer than we suffered in our games against Notre Dame and Washington (10 bad plays in each), Oregon State and Davis (11 in each), and USC (15).
We averaged 9.25 bad plays in our first eight gamesa
nd just 4.8 such plays in our last five. (And again, just 3,0 such plays in our last three.)
The Maryland game was near-perfect by this standard: One sack allowed, Peats false start, and Hogans fumble. But Cal was even better, and just one short of perfection: No sacks allowed, no offensive penalties, no fumbles. Hogans int was the only blemish.
The arrow looks up from this vantage point, no?

Offensively, the arrow looks way up. I'm still assuming that Hogan will be back, and even if Peat departs, I'm excited for what the offense will look like in 2015. If Peat returns? Potentially the best in the conference.

Sure seems like a sign of some solid coaching!
That's in response to some of the more outrageous criticisms of our coaching staff after losses. Not to say there's not room for improvement - but that's a really positive sign to me of our coaches' ability to adjust mid-season.
