Gary Andersen...is a really good coach.

Re: Oregon State makes really excellent hire - BostonCard - 12-10-2014

Yeah, that's an impressive hire.  I was surprised that Bret Bielema left Wisconsin for Arkansas, though I can imagine the idea that the allure and money in the SEC would trump the Big Ten.  But I have a hard time seeing how the Beavers are a more attractive team to coach that the Badgers.  The only thing I can think of is that Anderson is from the West (but mostly the Mountain West: Idaho State, Utah, Utah State, Southern Utah, Northern Arizona).

Anyways, good for the Beavers, who have to be delighted with how things turned out.

Could be something's foul in the state of Wisconsin? I've heard some rumors that Alvarez is not a pleasant guy to work for.

Re: Oregon State makes really excellent hire - washingtonismoney - 12-10-2014

Also will be interesting to see what kind of offense they use. Andersen at Utah State was spread; at Wisconsin, pro-style.

That would certainly go a long way toward explaining this. It's strange for a program to have two consecutive coaches jump ship to jobs that seem at face value to be worse.

It almost has to be something like that, doesn't it?

You don't see many coaches leave a top-half Power 5 conference school gig after one year for a traditional bottom feeder Power 5 conference school gig.

EDIT - whoops. That's two years at Wisconsin. Thanks WIM.

Two. He's gone 19-7 at Wisconsin; 13-3 in-conference.

Travis Haney of ESPN Insider is saying a big issue is assistant coach salaries (http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/travis-haney/post/_/id/3932/andersen-looks-to-push-wisconsin). Basically, Wisconsin's DC is very highly regarded and (apparently) Wisconsin refuses to pony up for him.

That was one of  the same issues that (allegedly) pushed Bielema out.

Re: Oregon State makes really excellent hire - OutsiderFan - 12-10-2014

ESPN just had a report on SC that said the two issues were:

1. Lack of budget for assistants (hard to imagine Oregon State has more money than Wisconsin)
2. Academic requirements kept Anderson from getting JC players and other student athletes in name only into the school

Re: Oregon State makes really excellent hire - BostonCard - 12-10-2014

So is Alvarez going to coach them in their bowl again?  Last time he did that it didn't work out so well for the Badgers.

Even funnier is that Wisconsin opens against Alabama next year.  Good luck to whoever has that for their first game with the team.

Hint to Andersen's motivation - BostonCard - 12-10-2014

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12011785/wisconsin-badgers-coach-gary-andersen-leaving-take-oregon-state-job

The ESPN article has an interesting quote from one of his players (Voldemort finalist Melvin Gordon):

Quote:"I was shocked," Gordon said. "Didn't see it coming. Thought he'd be there a long time ... He seemed happy. He was smiling. I saw no sign of this."  Gordon, who spoke to Andersen earlier in the evening, said of their conversation, "He said he had to do what was best for him. He sounded hurt. I heard hurt in his voice."

I wonder if he tried to negotiate something with Alvarez (like better salaries for assistant coaches), and Alvarez told him where he could shove it, at which point Andersen realized that his best bet might be to bolt.  You are not hurt if you are leaving unless you thought you had leverage on your current employer and they made it clear that your value to them was less than you thought.  Pure speculation on my part, but this almost sounds like the Harbaugh/Kansas dalliance, except that sane minds prevailed then.

One thing nice about coaching at Corvallis is that expectations are more or less under control.

A 7-5 or 8-4 season is sufficient to keep the wolves from howling too loudly.

Kind of the way Stanford used to be.

Really?  Is there significant "howling" for Coach Shaw's head?  I think there might be a little too heavy use of the old flagellum in that observation.  No doubt we all have transitioned to higher expectations.

I was shocked when it occurred to me how unhappy this season was making me as it unfolded and then we get a bowl invitation and it took me a little up short.  In the past getting to pretty much any bowl game was brobdingnagian.  Hell, The Play kept us from being bowl eligible.  We had freakin' John Elway!!!!!

So a little perspective has been lost.  That seems to be true.  But I'm not reading anywhere (except in reader threads which many times are not even Stanford fans commenting) that people are arguing for Shaw's removal.  I am still very proud of the Stanford fan culture, which in my experience reaches its pinnacle of balance and reason here at the CardBoard.

The mob not howling for Shaw's head, YET, but... - Redrum - 12-11-2014

...the articles of indictment have been drawn up.  Let's be honest.  The Cardboard is a sunny, peaceful place compared to the Bootleg.  Over there Shaw's shortcomings and future have a much rougher go.  And the critique isn't based so much on a "bad" season than a wider vision of Shaw's supposedly self-evident deep weaknesses and failings.  Hard to walk that back or get those who express those views to admit they're wrong.  Only national playoff stature and 100% recruiting success will do.  Or, maybe not even then.

Re: Oregon State makes really excellent hire - yvonne - 12-11-2014

Those articles were drawn up the day he was hired. According to those posters, Harbaugh is entirely responsible for all Stanford's recent success, he took all the good coaches with him, and we were left with a bunch of bumbling boobs. It's a crazy outlook that exaggerates all of Shaw's failures and diminishes all of his victories.

Maybe Alvarez really didn't like Wisconsin's 59-0 loss in the conference championship game and pushed Andersen out.

Try venturing a little farther afield for some eye-opening commentary.

The conspiracy theory over there in cheeseland is that Anderson was unhappy that Alvarez instructed him to throw the game in such a way that gave the B1G the best opportunity to put a team in the playoffs.

On the Bootleg these days the inmates are really running the asylum. The negativism knows no bounds. Shaw is a miserable excuse for a head coach who is irrevocably leading Stanford back to the days of Buddy and Wlat. Should he be fired? Well, no, because Muir is even more incompetent and would probably get someone even worse.
