WBB: Stanford 86 Hawaii 73 final - 81alum - 11-29-2014

First, an explanation about the Hawaii tournaments.  Hawaii has to host a lot of tournaments to be able to get any home games during the non conference season--given its travel costs.  No one wants to spend so much money and time for just a single game in Hawaii.  So these trips are billed as a nice treat for the players and their families--who often go to Hawaii to watch their kids play and vacation a little.  It also can help in recruiting for prospects to know that the team does some traveling to exotic locations.  (By the way, I just read this morning that the Puerta Vallarta tournament we played in last year got cancelled this year after 1 day due to some questionable finances--the three teams got to play the first of three games and then were locked out of the gym for days 2 and 3.)

Back to tonight.  We play tonight at 6:30--not much time to recover from yesterday's drubbing.  It is on Hawaii's home court.  Yesterday, about 200 fans showed up for the Stanford/North Carolina game and about 350 for the Hawaii/Prarie View game.  Hawaii is not New Mexico, apparently, so we won't have to worry about 8000 screaming fans in the pit.  Supposedly, the game will be on the Big West TV network, which might be available here:

http://www.bigwest.org/story.asp?story_id=16359

Hawaii is a fairly good team that played well yesterday in its win over Prairie View.  They are 5-1, with the sole loss being to C.al by 7 after leading them much of the first half of their game--also at home in a different islands tournament.

Hawaii has a six person rotation, has two 43% three point shooters (5'9" Mason  and 5'6" Wimbley), has a 62% inside presence (6'4" Morris), and has a phenom of a senior guard who has managed to block 8 shots and score in bunches.  She is 5'10" Shawna-Leigh Kuehe, who is from Obama's high school--Punahou.

Looking over the Hawaii C.al game probably gives us the best insight.  Kuehe went 10/23 with 9 free throws to score 29 points against C.al.  This guard also led the way with 15 rebounds--going up against the likes of Reshanda Gray.  Kuehe seems to have broken down the C.al defense somewhat effectively.  She did not take a single three point shot, so it must have been a lot of slashes to the basket that generated a bunch of points and a bunch of fouls.

Hawaii's Ashleigh Karatiana scored 19, going 5/19 and making only 1/8 from three point range.  Mason and Wimbley did not shoot very much--it seems like Karatiana was the designated bomber in that game.

All in all, Hawaii certainly looks like a beatable team, but it looks like a better team than New Mexico, and like NM, we are playing them on their home court.  Tonight's game is not going to be a gimme.  Hopefully Tara can use last night's disappointment to motivate our kids to play hard and to play smart tonight.

Re: WBB: Stanford vs. Hawaii - Jskass - 11-29-2014

Thinking this season is playing out as we expected - a rebuilding year and tough at the beginning. Two differences, both of which are positive but have distorted our perceptions: UConn win and Lili's increased presence. We may need to be patient with our expectations as team progresses this season. With that said, the time is drawing near for starting team and playing time decisions to enable further development to reach desired results.

Admittedly I have no coaching experience but see the two key decisions as (1) Taylor vs Karlie (or Bonnie) and (2) Erica McCall more time and points. She scored a ton in the summer league and should be a daily double double threat.

Kailee strong backup to Kaylee and Erica, just as Roberson to Amber?

Tonight we see mental toughness of team.

We are down 14-6 to start the game.  It can be watched on a bad feed (sometimes the camera doesn't move) on the above link, but the radio broadcast has much better audio here:

I think Tara told them to get it inside more, and we are trying.  But lots of ill advised shots from 8-10 feet.  One very nice play though when a guard cutting to the basket dished to Kaylee for an open 8 foot jumper.  We should be able to do that all day, but have not followed it up.

12 minutes into the game we have only taken 2 three point shots.

Our defense has been man, and it has not been all that effective.  Hawaii is getting too many inside shots.

Foul calls are brutal.

No score on video feed. Live stats are at http://stats.statbroadcast.com/broadcast/id=64640

Re: WBB: Stanford vs. Hawaii - 81alum - 11-29-2014

The livestats are current, the radio broadcast is about 20 seconds behind, and the video feed is at least another 20 seconds behind that.  It is an exercise in cognitive dissonance to keep all three in mind at the same time :P

Re: WBB: Stanford vs. Hawaii - CompSci87 - 11-29-2014

My video isn't that far behind stats. Maybe you can fast forward during a timeout?

SU up 40-29

Re: WBB: Stanford vs. Hawaii - 81alum - 11-29-2014

That was a nice pick and roll from Lili to Kailee, who took that same 8 foot jumper we saw Kaylee make earlier in the half.  That is something we have worked on since last night.

A 3 point shot with one second left in the half from Bonnie!  She was several feet behind the line.  Nice!

Re: WBB: Stanford vs. Hawaii - CompSci87 - 11-29-2014

48-34 halftime.

Re: WBB: Stanford vs. Hawaii - BobK - 11-29-2014

48-34 Stanford at the half.  Kaylee with 2 fouls early and didn't play much.  McCall with 8 rebounds.  Lili 4 of 7 from three for 13 points.

Re: WBB: Stanford vs. Hawaii - Viking_Guy - 11-29-2014

Lili and Bonnie have rediscovered their three-point strokes as the half wore on.  5-6 from deep for those two.

And Bird has been really holding down the fort inside defensively.  One caveat - the Bows' second big is a pretty fair three point shooter from the top of the arc.  Both Taylor and Kailee backed off her arms down, and only offered a cursory contestation of her shot.

Re: WBB: Stanford 48 Hawaii 34 at half - 81alum - 11-29-2014

Halftime

The game did not really turn around until we started hitting our three point shots.  When Lili made the first two she took, that separated us.  Then Bonnie made 2/3.  We would be behind without all those three point shots, which we are shooting at 67%.

On the inside we have had a couple of scores off the roll part of the pick and roll--in both cases by a big taking a short jumper.  That is encouraging.

We are tied for rebounds, which given our height advantage is a bit troubling.  Once or twice I saw Bonnie boxing out perfectly--but clearly not everyone has the knack tonight.

We are shooting 59%, Hawaii 34%.  Is it just that the Hawaii defense is so much worse than the NC defense that we went from 20% in last night's first half to 59% tonight?  I think there is more to it than that, but exactly what I am not sure.

I am pleased at how Erica McCall is playing.  7 points on 3/4 and 8 rebounds.  It must be a good match-up for her tonight.

Greenfield is still cold as ice as a shooter.  1/5 so far, 0/1 from three.  A couple of those were almost unfair, rattling around in the cylinder and coming back out.

On two point shots by our bigs we are 7/11.  That is a vast improvement over last night.  Again, I hope a lot of that is what we are doing and not simply the weaker defense.

Re: WBB: Stanford 48 Hawaii 34 at half - 81alum - 11-29-2014

There are a lot of phantom fouls on both sides.  Pretty poor officiating.  Kaylee has 4, McCall and Karlie have 3.  Definitely putting a crimp on things.

Re: WBB: Stanford 48 Hawaii 34 at half - CompSci87 - 11-29-2014

Whether it is or isn't a tieup is pretty random.

Re: WBB: Stanford 48 Hawaii 34 at half - BobK - 11-29-2014

Kaylee and McCall both with 4 fouls.  Up 9 with 7 1/2 left

I noticed the same thing last night.  What used to be called blocks are now being called tie-ups, among other oddities.

We are shooting a higher percentage from 3 than from 2!

Re: WBB: Stanford 48 Hawaii 34 at half - BobK - 11-29-2014

We are shooting 55% total to their 33%.  We have 14 TOs they have 7.

Re: WBB: Stanford 48 Hawaii 34 at half - BobK - 11-29-2014

They have made 23 FTs to our 8

Re: WBB: Stanford 48 Hawaii 34 at half - BobK - 11-29-2014

Thompson 6 of 7 from three.

Keep in mind Hawaii's best play has been on the bench for a long time and has just 4 points.  Was she hurt?

Re: WBB: Stanford 48 Hawaii 34 at half - 81alum - 11-29-2014

Yes, the fouls have been ridiculous and lopsided.

Lili is 6/7 from three point range.  One of the most amazing three point shooting performances I have seen.  If she hits another, I bet she sets some kind of record.
