The Cardinal - White game, NFL edition - BostonCard - 11-27-2014

im refering to the 49ers (Harbaugh, Jonathan Martin) versus the Seahawks (Baldwin, Sherman).  So far the White team has had the advantage, with a Sherman interception and a nice first down reception by Baldwin and the Seahawks (White team) up 7-0.

It would be easier to cheer for the "White" team if Pete wasn't running up and down their sideline.

Re: The Cardinal - White game, NFL edition - OutsiderFan - 11-27-2014

The Niners offense is as potent as Stanford's.  Five interceptions against the Giants two weeks ago and 16 points scored.  It's just brutal.

Re: The Cardinal - White game, NFL edition - BostonCard - 11-27-2014

Sherman just got his second interception.  I'm sure the fact that it is against harbaugh is an added bonus.

Sherman... Thrown at five times, none were completed, two were intercepted.  Not a bad squat day at (damn you autocorrect) the office.

After Sherman's second interception, the announcers were lauding Sherman's smarts, and one of them said, "I asked Richard Sherman, 'When did you know your life was going to be different?' And he said, 'Honestly? When I got that letter from Stanford."

Dang.  That's pretty cool.  Anyone have a clip of that?

It's also always fun to see Sherman & Dougie chatting & smiling together on the sidelines.

Not in MY office, buddy!

I got a good chuckle out of the announcers painting Pete Carroll as a big whiner. Some things haven't changed from his college days.

Sherman and Baldwin's success helps our program. Harbaugh does not. I expect to cheer against Harbs next year when he takes the Meatchicken job.

I think Harbaugh helped our program enough from 2007-2010 to earn him a *lot* of slack from here on out. He gets it from me, at least. (Though I have to say that when he's talking at a press conference, he always looks like he's had a botched lobotomy. Sometimes talks that way too...)

I often hear Harbaugh bashing at the sports bar I frequent.

Re: The Cardinal - White game, NFL edition - Stymie - 11-28-2014

I do not like Harbaugh's public persona, but I cannot disrespect his football accomplishments and acumen.

Re: The Cardinal - White game, NFL edition - GoodGrief - 11-28-2014

I freakin' love Coach Harbaugh

Re: The Cardinal - White game, NFL edition - BostonCard - 11-28-2014

Harbaugh took a 1-11 team and made it an orange bowl champion in four years.  While I might not agree with everything he did, on the balance, he was a brobdingnagian positive for the program.  I'm delighted to have Shaw as our current coach, but without Harbaugh we'd have never made it to where we are.

Jim Harbaugh's accomplishments can't be denied or lessened, but I remain extremely curious as to the common denominator of rot  linking the Stanford and Niners offenses these last two years.  It's difficult to imagine there isn't something in common between the two given they have basically tracked each other over the last three seasons.

Given how bad the Niners were yesterday against a contending Seattle team, and how the Niners and Stanford offensive performances have tended to mirror each other, it would  be not at all surprising to see Stanford be similarly bad against UCLA.

Why do you keep saying this? It isn't true. I already debunked it once: http://thecardboard.org/board/index.php/topic,11056.msg104866/topicseen.html#msg104866

SF's rankings went #18, #5, #8, and now #18 (it's been updated since my last post, and I'm throwing in 2011 because it makes this even more asinine). Our rankings went #6, #36, #18, #60. Those trends don't mirror each other (except that this year is really bad for both teams, though it's apparently not Harbaugh's worst) and there's also absolutely no reason to think that they would. The coaching staffs are doing different things with different players at different levels, connecting them for any reason is inane.

Re: The Cardinal - White game, NFL edition - washingtonismoney - 11-28-2014

I dunno, that seems like an uncharitable reading, stupac. Broadly, both coaching staffs have roughly league-average outputs over four years. Is that due to some sort of defect with the Harbaugh approach to offense? Seems like a plausible enough claim to me.

Well, first, both of those averages are comfortably above average. Second, that's not what he's claiming. Third, there isn't a "Haurbaugh offense", there's just a pretty standard west-coast offense with some newfangled crap added on. The 49ers aren't doing anything drastically different from most NFL teams, and plenty of college teams run similar offenses to Stanford's.

Finally, even if there were "some sort of defect" with whatever shared approach the two staffs have, there's no need to reference whatever the other team is doing because it's unlikely that said defect will manifest itself in the same way on both teams at the same time. For instance, our problems almost certainly stem from our lack of a big RB and our new OL, neither of which are problems the 49ers are dealing with.

Re: The Cardinal - White game, NFL edition - BostonCard - 11-28-2014

I get the sense that OutsiderFan was trying to take the analogy one step too far:

Quote:Given how bad the Niners were yesterday against a contending Seattle team, and how the Niners and Stanford offensive performances have tended to mirror each other, it would  be not at all surprising to see Stanford be similarly bad against UCLA.

That seems a bit too much of a stretch.  Obviously, through a half and change, it hasn't been true.  But aside from that, there is no reason it believe that a poor performance by the Niners against the Seahawks would have augured a bad performance by Stanford against UCLA, any more than a bad performance by Dallas against the Eagles would have predicted a bad performance by us against UCLA.  Nor would the fact that the Eagles playing well against Dallas predict that Oregon will have its way in the Civil War, other than the fact that we would expect that based on the fact that Oregon is good, and Oregon State isn't.  Nor would we expect USC to do well against Notre Dame just because Pete Carroll did well against the Niners.
