We should be ahead of TCU - readarmy1976 - 11-28-2010

TCU : OSU, 30-21
Stanford : OSU 38-0.

The tcu schedule is just pathetic. We should be ranked ahead of them. So, if auburn loses we should be in the NC game.

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - dabigv13 - 11-28-2010

If only margin of victory was in effect, we would likely be ahead of them. Curse the stodgy old BCS, and hope for some effective campaigning by Jimbo in the coming week.

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - readarmy1976 - 11-28-2010

I think it\'s stupid that people rank tcu ahead of stanford or wisconsin. no doubt tcu will get abused in the bowl game.

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - readarmy1976 - 11-28-2010

Do the pollsters really think TCU would beat Ohio State, Stanford, Alabama, etc?

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - Farm93 - 11-28-2010

The irony is that margin of victory was removed for conferences like the Pac-10.

TCU did not lose.   If Stanford was undefeated then it would be in the BCS NCG.  As it stands I do not have a problem with a non-AQ getting a chance in this incredibly flawed system.

Also a quick search of Stanford\'s recent history reveals losses to TCU, and Stanford did not win their conference.  With those two factors in play Stanford would have a very tough time passing TCU via the lobby path.

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - yvonne - 11-28-2010

If margin of victory were taken into account, Stanford would fall behind roll-em-up Wisconsin.

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - dabigv13 - 11-28-2010

Incorrect. See Sagarin\'s predictor model, where they would actually fall to 19 from 11 when margin is not factored in.

I think that is because the 1 point escapes vs ASU factor more heavily than meaningless 60 point victories over terrible Big 10 teams.

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - jayasena - 11-28-2010

I\'ve always thought that margin of victory should be factored in in some reasonable way. Say, capped at 3 touchdowns or something so that 1-point squeaks are recognized as such but there\'s no incentive to run up the score to 60 or 70 (well, other than to impress voters). I guess BCS powers only see black and white... no shades of gray.

excellent idea.

I was thinking this exact thought yesterday.  And I actually was thinking 21 points or so would be a good breakpoint.  The only objection to this that I could think of is that the object of football is to win...and if you can out-scheme the coach on the other sideline by just one point every single game (that may even be the gameplan going in...just win by one...grind the clock away), I think you deserve kudos for that.

Are there other objections to this system?

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - KartyFan - 11-28-2010

I agree with cardhorn that it poses problems near the end of games.  For example, Stanford might have been well served to run the ball into the end zone against ASU for an 11-point win, even though the entire nation except for Garvin believe it was the right move to ice the game.

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - Farm93 - 11-28-2010

Shhh...

Margin of victory really is a factor with the computers.  Shhhh... don\'t say anything.  Just keep it as our little secret until next week!

How!!  Why!!  The computer rankings often capture things like strength of the offense and strength of the defense.  If statistically your offense ranks high, that is good for some of the computer rankings.  If statistically your defense ranks high, that is also good for the some of the computer rankings.

How on Earth can you have a good offense statistically AND a good defense statistically and thereby maximize your standing with the computers?

Run it up on offense and be super stingy on defense while avoiding turnovers and getting a lot of takeaways.  And if you do all of that I promise you that team will be winning by big margins.

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - dabigv13 - 11-28-2010

Source on that F93? I think Massey is the only system that might use that, and the only source I have is from before they altered the computers to eliminate margin. I know for a fact Sagarin is only wins, losses, and the win/ losses of opponents and opponents\' opponents.

I will look into this more when I\'m on a computer instead of my DROID.

Re: We should be ahead of TCU - fullmetal - 11-28-2010

TCU did beat OSU when James Rodgers was still around though, right?  Oh well.  Andy Dalton might be injured, so good luck to TCU trying to represent in a bowl game.

Numbers Are a Weak Spot in the B.C.S. Standings

Quote:Accordingly, the computers end up being the patsy more than any part of the B.C.S. system. Fans want to understand the math behind them. They cannot, not because of quantitative inability but because of lack of transparency; only Wes Colley, who runs the Colley Matrix system, makes his formula public.
