OT: Stanford and CalTech Presidents support UC - Papa John - 11-14-2014

John Rosenbaum, President of CalTech and John Hennessy co-authored an opinion piece in support of public higher education in California:

I'm not sure what their motivation was for writing this. Given that I've spent the past 25 years in the UC system as a graduate student and employee, there's nothing really new that UC folks haven't been saying since the mid-1990s.

Of course, the real attack on public education is occurring at the elementary and secondary levels.  Society would benefit more from money put into that...Well, money and some real structural reforms.

Well, that's a common refrain, too, Redrum, and given that my son is a second grader in a California public school, I won't disagree.

But I would characterize the diminishing state support for public higher education in California, while having a different effect than K-12, as a "real" attack as well. It's a shame that we have to prioritize one level of education over the other.

No need to prioritize since they both seem destined to get NOTHING.  :(

"No Soup for You" Seems so appropriate sadly.

Now I am off to my school's pledge drive site to give funds for crayons, pencils and glue sticks.

Redrum...

At the K-12 level, structural reform is the primary need.  Money is a secondary issue.

Money without change is a waste of resources.

Perhaps they think that if University presidents say what UC folks have been saying since the mid-1990s it will get a little more traction.
