How to start the offense against the ducks? - Simas - 10-30-2014
Time for some speculation to pass the time until kick-off........
A quick start offensively will be most welcome on Saturday. No doubt easier said than done. Two keys are getting the ball into the hands of one of our play makers and getting Hogan comfortable. Some possibilities:
1. Play action swing pass to Sanders.
2. Play action rollout pass to one of the tight ends.
3. Possibly more unexpected would be Hogan running the read option.
Given the success of the no-huddle against OSU and the bedlam of the duck pond, I'd like to see up tempo from the start. In any case, I hope we stay away from handing off to 22 up the middle or trying to hit Montgomery or Rector deep to open the game.

You neglected the 102-yard kickoff return by Montgomery.

Agreed. I've thought ever since I first saw him that Sanders is a great candidate for play action swing passes, with blocking by Monty and Cajuste. The passes have to be precise and catch the runner in stride, though--almost like timing patterns. So Hogan would have to be more accurate than usual to enable us to run a lot of swing passes.

Yes, of course. I was referring to starting the offense after we recover the onside kick following Montgomery's opening kickoff return. 8)

Okay now you've done it. You've goaded me into doing two things I dislike: playing pop-psychologist and know-it-all coach. But here goes ...
The more I read, over and over, that Oregon thinks it's problem last year was making too much of this one game and that this year they're just treating it like any other game - the more it seems to me that Oregon is making too much of this game.
[For the 45th quotation on this topic, this from ESPN today
Quote: "We can't make it a bigger game than it is," Oregon center Hroniss Grasu said. "That's what I feel like we did last year. We were just focusing on that game way too much."

So, I think we're going to see the Oregon defense come in all pumped up to show that they aren't going to simply get pushed around by Stanford this time.
Here's how to take advantage of that:
1. Come out lined up in a partial Ogre-package (perhaps still one receiver so it's not too obvious). Play action to Wright or Sanders, then take advantage of the over-reaction by the duckies. My guess for best way to take advantage is have Cotton in on the line and let him release deep - but it could be Taboada. Probably not Hooper as he's caught 22 passes on the year and Oregon might key off of him.
2. Then try to actually see if we can manhandle Oregon like we did last year. If it works, that's the most straight forward way to beat them.
3. If it doesn't work, go to the stuff we tried vs OSU. It won't surprise Oregon, but their defense is poor enough it shouldn't need anything too fancy to score some points.

The coaching brain trust will have a 25-play script already drawn up. We'll start with a Wright run in between the tackles for 2 yds or less.

Second play will be Montgomery in the Wildcat.
