The weird Pat Haden appearance -
thunder_chik - 09-06-2014
U$C AD Pat Haden's odd materialization on the sidelines today has opened a can of worms. Apparently, whoever texted Haden to "come on down" to the field may have violated NCAA rules, according to an ESPN article (link at
http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/college-football/story/_/id/11477980/usc-trojans-ad-pat-haden-confronts-officials-game-penalty-coach-steve-sarkisian ). Sometime after (and in response to) Haden's confrontation with the officials over a warning Coach Sarkisian received, USA Today Sports reporter Dan Wolken posted a piece calling for Haden to resign from the CFP selection committee (link at
http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2014/09/06/usc-ad-pat-haden-press-box-sideline-argue-call-for-trojans/15210671/ ).
Things just get curiouser and curiouser with the Uncontrollably Sensitive Complainers...

I think they should have to forfeit the game. ::)

Don't think it's a coincidence that the refs discovered a clipping call after getting yelled at by the Sark/Haden combo.

Was the "chop block" a make-up call to pacify Haden?

I vote for that, but knowing the NCAA the decision would be made sometime around 2018.

This is just what you get when you have a former athlete as your athletic director. The culture at USC will never change as long as they have former Alpha Betas in charge. They simply believe they're better than everyone else (and consequently, everyone is out to get them) and the rules don't apply to them. Remember former AD Alvin Garrett's response to the Reggie Bush investigation? He actually said out loud -- and was foolish enough to be taped -- that the NCAA was pursuing the case because of jealousy. That's right. He believed that the NCAA was jealous of USC. It's a sickness, but it can't be cured. I hope there is some type of censure for Haden or the university, but only because I look forward to their reaction to it all.

Just in case someone missed the reference, the Alpha Betas were the villainous frat rats from

Happily, in
Revenge of the Nerds II, Ogre rehabilitates himself as a nerd, then presumably transfers to Stanford and plays left tackle:

Has anyone in the media punditocracy pointed out the chop block call happened after Haden's blow up? That maybe that call isn't made if Haden hadn't engaged the ref a few minutes earlier?

Who knows. It's impossible to say if that mattered at all. I don't know why a ref would react more to an AD yelling at them than they would a coach, they both have the same power to do anything to the ref: zero.

I think Haden should have to atone by personally thanking the refs the next time USC gets a favorable call. :)

In most sports the number of non-players that can "discuss" prior calls with the referee is limited to a precious few. I simply can't believe the ADs, Chancellors, Presidents, Board of Regents, or top donors should be in that category. The NCAA needs to get on this because the same thing happened with Vanderbilt. During that game when they had the Anchor Down instead of player names, so some guy came in with a recent printout of an e-mail in an attempt to overturn the decision. That e-mail was ultimately used to overturn the ruling. In the e-mail Vanderbilt had approval to wear the uniform, but that approval did not include the use "Anchor Down".
If the NCAA does not create and/or enforce that rule I can imagine a world where at each television time out various donors, ADs, presidents, and/or former players will demand their 30-45 seconds with the referees to explain why in their opinion the ref is making too many mistakes.
