Yes. most frustrating that Stanford Offense played so well except in the RED ZONE.  Game seems to have come 2 games too early.  No amount of Guinness can dull the pain of this.

The Haden thing was very weird.

Good post, Garvin. I think you do have to go all the way back to the 1971 SJS game to find a loss that is as frustrating as this one was.

Re: Final: U=S=C 13, Stanford 10 - thunder_chik - 09-06-2014

Appreciate your post, Garvin.  Thanks for articulating the feelings we share--disappointment, frustration, and right now, hopelessness.  Deja vu on that fourth down play near the goal line--wasn't that the same play we ran fruitlessly in our last possession of the 2014 Rose Bowl?  Painful to watch.  The Stanford Sports network cut its show short by about 10 minutes... what can you say about where to start to "fix things"?  Too many wasted opportunities, sloppy execution, excessive penalties, play calling foibles, lack of confidence, fuzzy strategy, confusion, miscommunication.  Yikes.

P.S.  I really, really DESPISE the Wildcat!!!

Re: Final: U=S=C 13, Stanford 10 - jayasena - 09-06-2014

The lack of a reliable inside runner is really hurting us in the red zone. That and the inexcusable penalties.

Re: Final: U=S=C 13, Stanford 10 - fullmetal - 09-06-2014

This was a classic Stanford game (Cardiac Cardinal), and even the recent grads at our watch party were expressing that "we're gonna lose it" sentiment.

Form tackling seems to have gone out the window this offseason.  Lots of fly-by whiffing.  Hogan looked scared out there at times.  Ty Montgomery was the offense's jet fuel.

The OL didn't quite have it today, and neither did the DL pile on the pressure that I thought they needed to prevent runs and big passing plays.  Anyone got an opinion on Akina's DB coaching thus far?

Even Hogan's fake-to-delayed-draw was too slow for the RB (Wright?)--the replay showed that the ball was not put directly in front of the RB and was sort of gathered while brushing by...a surefire recipe for disaster.  So not only are Hogan's throws delayed by poor mechanics, but so are his fakes...(sorry, cheap shot...but that's on him to get the ball in the right place for the RB).

I feel like my predictions were somewhat validated.  $C's athletes matched up fairly well with ours, and Stanford's line play was not dominant.  $C had enough breathing room to do what they did.

I'll let others talk about the playcalling and RZ failures.  Argh.

9 trips inside the 30, 10 points. As the announcers on the halftime MSU-Oregon game said, that is hard to do.

Is that the sort of thing that irritates the NCAA, one wonders?  Some d-bag coach whines like a teenage girl to his AD who comes hustling down to berate an officiating crew?  Or is that behavior that the NCAA would reward, given Haden's deep desire for fair treatment?

Our sole TD was scored by 235 pound Patrick Skov.  Maybe that's part of the answer.

Re: Final: U=S=C 13, Stanford 10 - stupac2 - 09-06-2014

That was so frustrating.

The plus side of all of this is that USC might have the best defense we face this year, and we were moving it basically at will against them, outside of their 30 anyway. So if we can manage to fix a few problems that should be eminently fixable (dumb OL penalties), then we have a real shot to run the table.

RE: The Sarkisian-Haden thing...According to an ESPN article, Sark's text to Haden was apparently an NCAA rules violation, albeit without any penalty.  Link at http://espn.go.com/los-angeles/college-football/story/_/id/11477980/usc-trojans-ad-pat-haden-confronts-officials-game-penalty-coach-steve-sarkisian

I disagree, respectfully.  I am sick of the hubris, against a good D, that says we will you exactly what we're going to do and dare you to stop it.  Good God, how often does it have to fail?  Turley or not we are not the only big, strong, skillful players in the universe.  How about a little use of playmakers?  Why, oh why, do we need to bully our way up the middle?  A trst of manhood?  Come on.  If you have a Gerhardt, Tayler or Gaffney, yes, but when you don't why pretend?  Line up that way and go wide.  Toss it to Hooper?  Taboada? (Or whatever) even sneak a fullback outside, or send Hogan outside.  Play with the guys you have, not the one's you wish you had.

Re: Final: U=S=C 13, Stanford 10 - washingtonismoney - 09-06-2014

I don't know, I don't think "bullying up the middle" was the main reason for our redzone errors. We missed the 4th down conversion up the middle, but was it many other plays? I'm in no mood to rewatch the game, but that's not my memory.

Re: Final: U=S=C 13, Stanford 10 - dispr - 09-06-2014

What killed me was the personnel choice on the  4th and 1 at the 3 yard line. Why handoff to a true freshman in Marx when you have Skov who barrelled in for a TD earlier in the game??

Yeah, personnel choices are the main offensive weakness I see from Shaw et al. Don't understand why Seale still gets competitive snaps, to take another example.

Re: Final: U=S=C 13, Stanford 10 - Fresbone - 09-06-2014

Fullmetal-
All due respect, but I thought that Hogan looked pretty composed and executed pretty well. I watched on my little screen, so I might have missed something. Obviously, our kicking killed us. Once Shaw concluded that we couldn't kick a field goal, the play calling on the USC side of the field had to change. I think if this game was played 10 times, it would be 5-5. If it were played 10 times at the end of the season, probably more like 7-3 in favor of Stanford

I really hate the fact that that whiney punk Sarkisian got the win, and it certainly reminds me if Classic Stanford football from my era, but the last several years have redefined Classic Stanford football.

Bet Army next week and run the table. Go Card!

Re: Final: U=S=C 13, Stanford 10 - Bruce Wang - 09-06-2014

Getting beat athletically I can understand.  Can't beat in the mental game, that's not Stanford.  It's maddening.

The silver lining is that the defense played well.  Better than I thought they would.

Let's look ahead.  Lots to coach from this game.  How Shaw and the staff respond will show how good they really are. Use this game as motivation and a teaching moment for the rest of the way.  Win out, and there might be a chance for revenge this season

I'm sorry, but to me it was the lack of allowing the tailbacks to perform in the redzone (as well as the field goal problems) that were the problem.

Re: Final: U=S=C 13, Stanford 10 - berto41 - 09-06-2014

189 pound Kelsey Young?! Sanders isn't very good at running inside. So, who are you pining for? Remound Wright? Seems like the only one left at this point.Â
