Cardinal Conversation: Glyn Milburn - Hank 91 - 06-30-2014

Last week Glyn Milburn was nice enough to talk to me for an hour or so, and we covered a lot of ground. We started with his high school career, got to the bottom of his transfer from Oklahoma to Stanford (there was more intrigue there than I had imagined), and discussed his time in the NFL. It's a bit longer, I think, than my previous interviews, but those of you who remember watching him will probably find it worth the time.

I think there's an error of some kind in the middle. It looks like this:

Quote:If they didn’t have Russell White I would’ve had the same approach during the game.

that’s where I first started having conversations

GMC:
Right, completely out of nowhere.

Milburn:
No one expected it. No one expected it.

It seems like a question or two got cut off.

Otherwise this is fantastic, great read.

StuPac -- thanks a million for this. I was fighting sleep while editing last night at three in the morning, and apparently I lost my way. The missing question was about the arrival of Bill Walsh. To avoid your having to take a trip back to the site, here's what it says now:

GMC:
During your last year Bill Walsh arrived. What was that transition like going from Denny Green to Bill Walsh. Bill Walsh was already a football legend at the time. What was it like playing for him?

Milburn:
It was a surreal experience because, number one, the timing of his coming to Stanford that second time was out of nowhere.

GMC:
Right, completely out of nowhere.

I met up with Glyn once his senior year and told him how much I'd enjoyed watching him play. He could not have been more gracious. Just one more of the many reasons I love being a Stanford fan.

"Out of the blue" - Redrum - 07-01-2014

We'd just located from Calif. and all my connections to Stanford were just friends on the phone or this new-fangled e-mail thing.  As it happened, a connected alumini/Buck Club member took a short consultancy with the firm I was working for.  I dropped by to talk football with him.  I speculated on who we might hire to replace Green.  He hesitated a moment and said  " Well, prepare to be surprised.  Very surprised.  Give me a call in a couple of days."  The "Very surprised"  line was delivered with a recognizable I-know-something-you-don't-know grin.  As it was, within two days,  Bill Walsh was announced as the new coach.  His work completed, the consultant happened to be leaving that same day but I caught him before he left.  I can't recall his exact words,  but it was something akin to "Well, how do you like that surprise?"  I probably just stood there saying something inane like "Bill Walsh??  I can't believe it.  Bill Walsh ??"

So often you read something in the media and you wonder about the rest of the story.  This interview is the real deal, with some truly substantive nuance.  For example, Milburn's observation that sure, lots of Oklahoma players were in the pros, but how many were running backs?  Oklahoma only had two players drafted in 1993, when Milburn was drafted in the 2nd round.  And both of those picks were 7th rounders, a TE and a DB.  In 1992, however, Oklahoma had nine players drafted, including Mike Gaddis in the 6th round.  But given that Gaddis was a year ahead of Milburn, he might have played in front of him the entire time.  Gaddis never made an NFL roster, incidentally, but he was a workhorse at Oklahoma.  Leon Perry was a senior when Milburn was a frosh, so he would have played in front of him at Oklahoma.  So Milburn made a great read.

BTW, Glyn Milburn still holds the NFL record for most yards in a single game with 404, when the Broncos played the Seahawks

Blast from the past - Bruce Wang - 07-04-2014

A new generation of Stanford student-athletes have come to the same conclusions.  I wonder if Stanford football players said the same before Glyn.  I imagine that they did, but I didn't follow Stanford sports before 1990.

I agree with garvin.  Milburn was the most electrifying running back I've seen in a Stanford uniform.  We've seen flashes.  I think Barry J. Sanders could be the second coming.  They both used to reside in Oklahoma.

Really good interview. Nice job, Hank.

P.S. Darrin Nelson spells his name with two r's.
