Chandler Dorrell - ChicagoCard - 06-03-2014

Twitter says Chandler Dorrell is headed to Vanderbilt. His dad is offensive coordinator there.

It's a transfer, not a recruiting loss - Redrum - 06-03-2014

Chandler played on our scout team as a walk-on.  Vanderbilt not quite Stanford, but it's a credible academic school and he'd get to play for his dad,  Karl Dorrell,  former UCLA head coach who is OC at Vandy under Derek Mason.  Maybe his chances of playing time are better at Vandy.  If not, he's close to family at least and might get the "employee family discount".  Good luck, Chandler.

That is interesting I didn't know Dorrell was one Mason's staff. Dorrell is a lousy coach and play caller but a really good recruiter.

Who the hell is chandler dorrel?

Chandler Dorrel is the son of former UCLA coach Karl Dorrell. Karl is now on Mason's staff at Vanderbilt, as mentioned above, and his son Chandler was a walk-on wide receiver for the Cardinal.

Dorrell is a walk-on DB. He did some good things this spring. He had an interception return for TD in the spring game. But he wouldn't have played for us in the fall absent a series of injuries.

That may be, but I have a sneaking suspicion that Mason, who IS a really good coach and whose job depends on the performance of his OC, does not share your opinion of Dorrell's coaching and play-calling prowess.

Good coaches have never hired bad ones? Mssrs. Buh, Lynn, and Polian are surprised.

Dorrell was a terrible head coach, but I'm not sure how bad of an OC he was. As OC at Northern Arizona his teams put up good numbers, everywhere else he has been OC with Neuheisel as HC ( A HC who I assume took a fair amount of interest in play calling). Maybe Dorrell has the Norv Turner disease: a much better coordinator than head coach. The list of coaches who fit that description is pretty long: Buddy Ryan, Wade Phillips, Dave Wanstadt. It will be interesting to see what the Vandy offense looks like for the next year or two. I assume with a defensive minded coach, the offense really will be Dorrell's baby. (Um, along with Chandler)

Not intentionally!

I know nothing about whether Dorrell is/was/will be a good or bad coach or OC, but I think it is relevant that Mason hired him.

There was lots of discussion on the Vandy board, when Dorrell was hired at VU, about his record at UCLA. He was fired as HC, but the record was not bad, it just wasn't good enough:  bowl games in 5/5 seasons, Pac-10 co-coach of the year once, no recruiting or other scandals. I believe it was Neuheisel who said that the UCLA job was impossible to succeed in at that time because of lack of support from the administration. So opinions can differ, which was the point of my post.

My guess is that Dorrell and Mason are hoping/expecting that Dorrell will be successful and will use that success as a stepping stone back to a college HC job again.
