The NY Times continues their infatuation with Stanford - profoundly stating that Harvard is passe and Stanford the new IT school.
I guess that's good.

The first time I read your post, CTCard, I thought you were talking about Information Technology.

I am continually amazed at the number of articles that the New York Times runs about Stanford. Is one of their high-ranking editors an alum?

Maybe I can claim I was going for a clever double-entendre.
Yeah ... that's it. That's the ticket.

There's another one in the works...
BTW they really should just go ahead and hire print journalism's leading expert on Stanford. Of course, I'd doubt he'd go there unless it included exclusive coverage on a certain actress.

The only two editors that I know for sure have Stanford connections are in photography:
Josh Haner is senior editor of photo technology and recently won a Pulitzer in feature photography.
http://www.stanforddaily.com/2014/04/15/stanford-alumnus-wins-pulitzer-prize-in-photography/
Tiina Loite is photo editor for the dining section.

Pretty sure there must be more who are either alumni or have family who are alumni. However, I suspect that the competition is even better represented. The explanation may have as much to do with negative feelings toward Harvard by alumni of other Ivy League schools. In my undergraduate years at the southern end of the Ivy League, I saw a lot more positive references to Stanford than to Harvard.

The Times may be the paper of record. But the best source of information on all things Stanford is right here.

Given the Times's track record of spotting stupid trends --

Publius, this statement is solid truth. I have learned many things beyond the forum of sports by simply spending a few minutes a day scanning the forum.Â
The CARDboard keeps it (and I define IT as the broad spectrum of the deep Stanford experience) real.
As for the NYT article, perhaps this is just a subtle backhand to Boston.
Fringe benefits - Redrum - 05-30-2014
This is great pub, I guess. But the real message was about focus of universities and how
Harvard has one dominant field of focus and with engineering not as emphasized. Stanford almost has a walk-on part: Stand there and look absolutely smashing while the star of the show re-evaluates her wardrobe and hairstyle.
But the real value of the article is -- like poking a caged animal with sharp stick to get a rise out of them -- it gets the Bear Insider posters snarling like crazed Rottweilers. They
never get it. They never do. Unable to find true mental security in simply being a really good (maybe the best) public university, they play right into our hands by always rising to the bait and exposing their insecurity. That's why, for example, it's easy to like 71Bear. He doesn't get torqued. Doesn't lose sight of reality. Sees beyond the immediate. Is secure in what he knows. And has been around, simply being sane, for years.  (You're welcome 71Bear. Some day you can buy me a beer, or I'll buy you one. )

Since I'm still relatively new, may I ask if this is when the grammar gods strike? An incorrect declension of the object of a preposition embedded in a reference to Kathy is a mortal sin, right?

I have a hard time understanding why some people here react like a grade school English teacher when they see a typo, but have no reaction when they see excellent writing.
Way to go Redrum!

Notwithstanding half an hour of "registration" and incorporation into the Microsoft Borg of my brandy new computer, this was the first site I visited and the first thread I read. And what do I find? A compliment! Thanks, Extra Point. It takes the sting out of the stigma of not using a Mac. My daughters are in charge of that shaming task and they've perfected it.Â

Garvin has committed many a mortal sin with language and sometimes in reference to me as well. ;)
Yes, Papa John, that "I" should be "me."
As for other Stanford grads at
The New York Times, there is Felicity Barringer, national environmental correspondent. Not sure if she is stationed on the East or West Coast, though, since her husband, Phil Taubman, is now a consultant at Stanford's Center for International Security and Cooperation. He, too, is a Stanford grad and former editor-in-chief of
The Stanford Daily. He left the
Times in 2008 after 30 years there.
John Freed, another former
Daily colleague, is the
Times ombudsman.

Gee, I'm just trying to fit in, Extra Point. No offense intended. I was roundly criticized when I called garvin "Mr. Garvin," but perhaps I've gone too far the other way?
I do have a reaction when I see excellent writing: I give the post a +1.

Actually, the moniker Papa John was given to me by a co-worker after the birth of my son.

Papa John, garvin's error was so glaring - especially for a man of his learning and profession - that I can't help but think garvin did that intentionally . . . just for Kathy.Â
Either that or garvin is a mere mortal . . . just like the rest of we. :P

Relax. This isn't a trend. Stanford supplanted Harvard as the best university in the world a long time ago. The rest of the world is just figuring it out now.Â
I have found that for subjects that I know well: The Times and The Journal are late to the party or get the story wrong in an important but unobvious way. What's scary is that most business people get their understanding of industries other than their own from The Journal.
