Quote:Johnny Dawkins, Stanford Cardinal
He was Coach Ks right-hand man for a while on the bench, and is another former Duke star. However, his stock dropped while he was slow to get it going on the West Coast after taking the Stanford gig back in 2008. Dawkins, who is 50, led the Cardinal to the Sweet 16 last season, and, although the program loses a bunch, he has a highly touted recruiting class coming in this season. His stock could begin to shoot upward with another tourney run.
Odds: 12-1

I wouldn't think it's that high unless either:
1. Coach K retires after next season when Dawkins will be looking for a new job
2. Coach K retires in about 4-5 years when Dawkins will be looking for his next new job

So, you think it's more likely he'll end up as the next Duke coach if he is unemployed at the time?

Speaking of Dawkins, what I find curious about his employment situation is that he was brought back...but not given an extension. The last extension took him to '15-'16 (
http://www.ruleoftree.com/2011/7/7/2264212/stanford-gives-johnny-dawkins-2-year-contract-extension), meaning he has two years left after the upcoming year. Typically coaches like to push for an extension in this range, using the rationale that recruits won't come without the belief that their coach will be present.
But no extension here, which is a bit strange. Muir-initiated, Dawkins-initiated...or something from nothing? (Probably that, but still weird.)
Re: Anyone with ESPN insider... - StanFan88 - 05-29-2014
I'm glad Dawkins has not gotten an extension - he hasn't earned it. The only constant of the Dawkins era is that his teams perform below their talent level with the lone exception of the first week of this year's NCAAs.
This team didn't roll into the NCAAs they squeaked in. They played like crap in all but one of their last seven games before the NCAA tournament. I think they would not have gotten in had they lost to ASU in the conf QFs. They had one great week in the tournament - the best week in Dawkins history. But it was only a week. The team then failed to even show up at the Sweet 16 against Dayton.
Despite that one great week:
- The team finished 10-8 in conference which ties for Dawkins best record in six seasons
- The team never won more than four games in a row overall and three in a row in conference, both at or near Dawkins career highs
- The team finished in sixth place in conference, tied for Dawkins best finish in six seasons
Is any of this acceptable to you? It isn't to me, and it's why I gave up my season tickets and won't even think of coming back until there's a new head coach.
The roster has only three guys who have any significant on-court experience - in part due to injuries but also because the next guys up couldn't earn court time because they just weren't that good. Next year's team has TONS of potential but Dawkins has almost zero success at developing potential. I would be very surprised if this team wins 8 games in conference, and that likely means that Dawkins is shown the door - which I view as a positive development that will be two years too late.

Dawkins has a built-in excuse for the coming season: The loss of his veteran senior class and the presence of all those freshmen, who will no doubt show flashes of real promise, just as Powell et al did four years ago. Barring a total collapse, he's here until his contract expires and/or it's extended. At the end of the season, Muir said Dawkins will be with us for a long time. There's no reason to doubt his intent. Muir does not see the program the same way most of us do.

That seems like an odd thing to assert. Coaches contracts really, really rarely expire. Trent Johnson's was the last I could think of, in college sports, and I can't really think of any examples off of the top of my head -- and certainly not in revenue sports. It's like saying, "washingtonismoney will be around until he dies of the bubonic plague or any of the other potential killers." It would be really weird and interesting to die of the bubonic plague these days, so to wave it away seems like a strange choice!
Like you, I would guess Dawkins sticks around for some time, but I think you're underestimating the strangeness of the situation.
Let's recap the conference, as far as I can tell:
Sean Miller, through 2017-18 (
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/ua/articles/20130613regents-approve-sean-millers-contract-through.html)
Cuonzo Martin, through 2019 (

Steve Alford, through 2020 (

Herb Sendek: ?
Dana Altman, through 2020 (

Tinkle: ?
Romar, through 2020:

Kent, through 2019:
http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10718229/ernie-kent-introduced-washington-state-cougars-coach
Enfield, through 2019:

Boyle, through 2018:

Krystkowiak, through 2019:

So, if there's a coach with fewer remaining years on his contract in the conference, it's not accessible by a quick google. You don't think that's interesting and/or strange?

Not even Trent Johnson as far as I can tell, which only further bolsters your point.
The articles from that time seem to indicate that the trouble was that Johnson was left hanging with only a year left on his contract - not that it actually expired.
Here is Wilner talking about the issue before Johnson left for LSU. Wilner writes, "Johnson's contract expires a year from now". The article is dated March 27, 2008 which was one month (to the day I think) before Johnson bolted for LSU and one month minus four days before Montgomery signed with Cal. [Wilner speculates that Bowlsby wanted Montgomery coaching Stanford again.]

Perhaps Muir was waiting to see how much of a dip ticket sales are taking before formulating an offer. Don't rule out the possibility that Dawkins himself asked to put things on hold while he watches a situation developing somewhere else.
Sure, these things are possible.
Quote:What I think is an odd thing to assert is that there's any possibility...he'll get fired the season after a Sweet 16 trip. ...
Well, I didn't assert that, so feel free not to worry.
What I
did assert is that it's extremely odd that Muir announced Dawkins is coming back, said he'd be staying for quite some time, and then not extend him. It's a situation where his lack of action doesn't match his words. It's fair to ask, "what's going on here?" You've provided a couple explanations. There are others. Who knows? The point is, the situation is odd, and as far as I can tell, unique in the conference. You can be blase if you'd like, but I don't think it's the common-sense reaction to this combination of facts.
