ESPN analyst is tearing him down.

I can understand why Todd McShay did not like the pick - Washington has plenty of OLBs with other pressing needs still unsatisfied primarily on the offensive line. The pure negativity with no upside commentary is quite astounding. Rarely do I tweet anything personal on my account @All_Right_Now1 (shameless plug) but he really pissed me off. The GM for Washington did state they were going to build depth and it appears that even though they have OLBs on the roster that are functional, the talent and upside of The Yeti is too good to pass up.

Todd McShay can suck it!

When did it become the cultural norm to exaggerate mild criticism into personal attacks that require retaliation? McShay said he thought Murphy was a solid player. His criticism was he could have been had in the the 4th round. Kiper, OTOH, thought it was reasonable to pick Murphy in the 2nd round.
The tone of these comments above suggest Murphy's ability to play was called into question when that was not really the case.

I am actually more surprised that the 49ers took an OG with a torn ACL over Yankey at the end of the 3rd round.

I think you are assuming the draft and surrounding comments actually have some meaning. Are you related to McShay?

One thing I find surprising. Through 3 rounds, here's the draft picks by team of Pac-12 + N.D.:
N.D.: 5
UCLA: 2
Oregon State: 2
SC: 2
UW: 2
WSU: 1
Stanford: 1
Colorado: 1
59ers: 1
ASU: 1
Oregon: 1
It's a bit odd that the perceptions pre-season was that this was a loaded Stanford team; and that we turned out to be a very good to elite team; and yet we're laggards in players drafted. Not sure what the reason for this is. Oregon, similarly, lags; but then Mariota and Ekpre-Olum decided to stay. (And both surely would've been drafted quickly.)

The CSN Redskins reporter certainly took McShay's comments the same way I did.

Wow McShay breaking out the sledgehammer on this pick. Calls Murphy a 4th rd pick. That might make me like it more #RedskinsTalk

That was really odd. I get that the guy was projected as a second rounder, but really? Selecting an OG with a torn ACL?

It seems ACL injuries are not nearly the setback in ones career they used to be. The 49ers drafted a guy who held his own against Jadaveon Clowney, who they can afford to have sit out a year to recover. Yankey ran a 5.5 40 and doesn't have as big of an upside.Â
People have to remember the draft is about upside potential based on certain benchmarks. It seems Brandon Thomas has a higher upside when healthy than Yankey, so he gets drafted higher, even if injured. Moreover, the 49ers don't need Thomas to play now, so they have the luxury of picking a guy who might be better later but can't play right away. Most teams would draft Yankey ahead of Thomas because they need a player this coming season. It seems Yankey is a lock to be drafted in the first hour of the 4th round, and it is entirely possible he ends up with the 49ers as they have four 4th round picks.

Pundits know nothing. Mel Kiper rated the 2011 49er draft a "C-" and that their second round pick was a reach. Here's the 49er 2011 draft. I'd say it was reasonably successful:
Aldon Smith, HoF talent, most sacks (42) in first 43 games of career of any NFL player.
Colin Kaepernick, holds record for QB yards rushing in a game and did it in a PLAYOFF game vs. Green Bay, led NFL in YPA in 2012, 17-6 as starter, 1 SB, two NFC champ games, 2nd in NFL in YPC last year
Chris Culliver (starting nickelback, currently on IR),
Kendall Hunter, #2 RB averages 4.6 per carry
Daniel Kilgore (solid backup, played in all 32 games over last two years, will compete to start at C this year)
Ronald Johnson, played WR for PHILLY,
Colin Jones, rare caucasian DB, played 44 of 48 regular season games over last three years
Bruce Miller, lead/starting FB by week 3 of rookie year, started 34 of 45 games, 48 receptions (as FB) over 3 years.
Michael Person, didn't play in NFL
Curtis Holcomb, Jacksonville's travel team.
Not a bad draft. Brushes with the law? Different story. But not a C- draft.

Doesn't this point toward coaching? At least for us, since we're clearly losing a lot of our talent, I think you're right that Oregon kept most of their stars.

59ers have 2 players drafted before Stanford does:

In fact, St. Thomas Aquinas HS in FL has more draft picks than Stanford does:

What a remarkable slide.

Reynolds just picked at #162.
I, too, thought that we were underperforming (draft wise), but Ed puts us in the top 10 with 4 picks so far, which matches our performance on the field in 2013 and Jan 1 2014.

Quote:Texas gets shut out: No Longhorns were taken in the NFL Draft. The closest Texas came to having a pick was former Texas quarterback Garrett Gilbert, who finished his career at SMU, and was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the sixth round at No. 214.
Edit: And apparently Southern Kal only had three players drafted.

I personally like the fact that it is going to be a long slow slog before Texas get's back to where they need to be. Am going to enjoy the slow ride.

Hopefully Shaw et al. can raid Texas high schools while Strong is building back up.
