Muir on Dawkins -
CapitolHillCard - 03-21-2014
I know this is not good news for a lot of folks , but here is an excerpt on Muir's thoughts on Dawkins from the Chronicle:
"As coach Johnny Dawkins' news conference ended Friday, Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir was asked in the rear of the room if Dawkins would be back next season.
The coach has been under fire from Stanford fans - and Muir himself - this season but in the glow of the Cardinal's opening victory over New Mexico in the NCAA Tournament, Muir said Dawkins is his man.
"He will be the coach hopefully for many years to come," Muir said."

On to plan B.
Stanford makes a miracle run to the Elite 8 and then an SEC team hires him in mid-April. Win-win.
I must confess that it seems possible that Stanford will play a weakened Kansas tough, and with that Dawkins will be safe at least until the end of this current contract. Of course, there are a lot of great SEC programs, with money to spend, that missed the tournament, and many probably would allow JD to bring in the types of players he wants/needs to become a great coach.

I'm going to hold all comments on our coaching future until Stanford's NCAA run is finished. Stanford just won their first NCAA game in 7 years and darned if I'm not feeling happy and sporting a 7 foot smile. For at least two more days I'm going to just enjoy these senior's final run.

Because I'm Happyyyyyy ....
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Clap along if you feel like thats what you wanna do
Did I mention I'm feeling slightly happy today?Â

What he said...Â
Life's too short, and tourney opportunities too scarce, to worry about potential future problems when we've got one of those rare chances to still be rooting for men's basketball in late March. Even if Dawkins had coached us to a much better regular season record, we wouldn't be in an appreciably better position right now. He sure looked happy [or maybe profoundly relieved] in the post-game interview I saw, and I'm not going to begrudge him that. I'm still not happy that Muir seems to be basing his decision largely on scores/outcomes and not fundamentals/quality of play, but there will be plenty of time to worry [and criticize] about next season after the tourney is over.

I'm with Leftcoast - no discussion about the future until this season is over. Gonna keep fingers crossed that the team plays better on Sunday than they did yesterday, especially along the front line. Having as many fouls as rebounds is NOT good.

I've got not problem continuing the discussion. Best case for Stanford is winning at least one more game to entice an SEC school to swoop in and grab Dawkins while he's hot. Even a run to the final four wouldn't change my mind about his long term prospects as a coach.

They weren't rare before Dawkins got here.Â
I arrived at Stanford in 1994, and between then and when Dawkins took over, the team made the tournament 13 out of 14 years, and advanced at least to the 2nd round in 11 of those years. So what everyone is celebrating as a brobdingnagian success this year was the norm for the decade and a half before Dawkins arrived.
I hate to be so negative. I'm really trying to relax and enjoy the tournament. But I'm not finding it easy to do so.
Edit: Just to clarify, I'm not saying that I expect a tournament record like we had in the 1995-2008 tournaments. I recognize that my arrival at Stanford coincided with an unusually successful period. But making the tournament once in six years is clearly well below any reasonable standard.

I started going to Stanford basketball games around 1960, so it was about 29 years before I saw my first tourney game. I actually went to Charlotte to see us lose that game. Indeed, as I recall, Mont.y lost in the first round a couple of times before things got going smoothly and we stopped being one-and-done. I also recall a fair amount of grumbling about those one-and-done years and a fair number of people suggesting that Stanford might be better off with someone other than Mont.y. Sure glad that didn't happen...
At least Dawkins got a victory in his first attempt, even if that first attempt should have happened a year or two earlier.
I would LOVE to get back to the amazing days of 1995-2008, but I just think that -- at least while we're actually still playing in the tournament -- it's better to celebrate what's happening right now that than carp about next year...
