Glenn--

A couple of small things:

Randle was trying to flip the ball to Lemons, who made a valiant dive into the sideboards to try and save it.

The flagrant call was iffy, but the foul did occur before any contact with Randle's arms - Greenwood had an arm wrapped around Chasson pulling him in.

I'm pretty sure the missed foul call on Brown was not reviewable. As a result, you have a situation where the correct outcome -- New Mexico gets the ball -- gets overturned by replay. (The ref's initial call was correct, but for the wrong reason.) Kind of a perverse result. This kind of play happens a lot in basketball -- a bang-bang play on the baseline where there's contact and the ball flies out of bounds. Another reason to hate video review.

But enough negativity! The team showed a lot of heart in holding off New Mexico's charge. Fantastic defense down the stretch at a time when both Powell and Nastic had four fouls.

Thanks for the description of the final few minutes Garvin. I was watching in a crowded restaurant and we could not figure out what the call was on Randle.  We thought maybe offsetting technical fouls.

Like you, I thought we would implode in the last 3-4 minutes.  I only saw the second half, but Powell was not impressive.  If we are going to have a chance against Kansas, he will need to find his game and do so without fouling so much.    It wasn't pretty, but it was a W and the first one we have had in the Dance in way too long.  Here's to the seniors really bringing it on Sunday!

Kansas has their own issues this afternoon.  At the moment they look like a very, very weak #2 seed.  Even if they escape their 2 vs 15 game, I suspect Kansas is not as strong as their seeding would imply.

Re: Final: Stanford 58, UNM 53 - Leftcoast - 03-21-2014

So what do we know about Kansas, especially the Kansas team that some say is limping into this post season?

We know that two super frosh led the team in the regular season, Center Joel Imbiib and Guard Andrew Wiggin.  Imbiib's size and play in particular has raised NBA expectations with some saying he's a top 3 draft choice if he comes out this year.  Unfortunately for Kansas their all everything center has been hurt and is expected to be out at least through the first two rounds of the tournament.  In today's game that didn't really matter as Imbiib's back-ups more than made up for his lost production as Kansas outscored Eastern Kentucky by 35 in the paint.  When the Jayhawks remembered their size advantage they dominated.  When they shot jump shots they could only tread water.  Going 0-7 from beyond the arc didn't help.

So, how should Stanford play Kentucky.  Do we run with their guards or do we play a half court game?  If stopping Wiggin is key to our chances who do we assign this task?  Can Dwight, Nastic and Heustis slow down Imbiib's replacements?

What do our midwesterners who surely have seen Kansas play more than this West coast observer think about our chances?

Missed watching the game live due to work, but that end game probably would have given me a heart attack, so it's just as well.  That last 3 minutes was almost as ugly as watching men with long hair and skinny headbands.  Oh, wait...

From the AP story on the game:
Quote:New Mexico has been one and done the last two seasons, losing as the No. 3 seed to Harvard last year under coach Steve Alford and now as the No. 7 under Craig Neal. The Lobos' unofficial theme was "Unfinished Business."

Ha!  Had I been paying attention, all the signs were there that an upset was ripe for the picking.  Losses in consecutive years in the first round to 2 former Duke assistants, losing last year to the second best academic institution means that you will surely lose to the first, and of course, the infamous "unfinished business."  Ask Mr. Matt Barkley about Stanford.  We finish unfinished business.

Re: Final: Stanford 58, UNM 53 - StanFan88 - 03-22-2014

Looking ahead:  Stanford should play a large amount of 2-3 zone against Kansas.  They are not a good outside shooting team (0-7 3FG vs. EKU, 34% on season) and Wiggins love to drive to the basket.  Without Embiid they will not have the same offensive rebounding prowess.  Zone will also protect Stanford's front line, who UNM exposed on both ends.  The 9:15am tip time really sucks.  More anti-West Coast from the committee.

Looking back:  Not sure that Stanford won as much as UNM lost.  Great defense down the stretch but beyond the first 10 minutes the offense looked completely out of sorts, which I fail to understand since it's three juniors and four seniors who played all but 10 of the total 200 minutes.  By now they should be able to execute plays against ANY defense, but especially man & 2-3 zone which is all UNM played for nearly the entire game.

Re: Final: Stanford 58, UNM 53 - Hurlburt88 - 03-22-2014

Clearly many aspects of our play remain frustrating given the talent.  I believe we will be able to defend Kansas pretty well . . . am really worried about ability to sustain offensive consistency.

Re: Final: Stanford 58, UNM 53 - DC - 03-22-2014

I assume the team is staying in the Midwest between games, especially with finals over, so the early tip off time should be the same for both teams.

Re: Final: Stanford 58, UNM 53 - OutsiderFan - 03-22-2014

Powell continues to disappoint in big moments.  An all-conference selection who scores 3 pts and fouls out.  Usually that's enough to ensure team defeat.  Maybe there will be such a thing as a "good Powell" emerge against KU?

Flight of the Conchords isn't foreplay but it's still important.

Well, yes.  Yes, there are.

Come to think of it -- perhaps this is the look Bairstow and Greenwood were going for.

A better headline in Albuquerque would have been:  Two Lemons Drops Taste Extra Sour
