Another Andrew Luck post... - OutsiderFan - 03-11-2014

Met up with a buddy yesterday who happens to live in Palo Alto despite being a product of U.S.C. He has never had any love for Stanford.  We even went to the Arizona game together in 2011 and he downplayed how good Luck and Stanford were.

So anyway, he tells me how he saw Andrew at I think it was Trader Joe's the other day.  And then he gushes about how great a guy he is.  So I asked my friend if he talked to him. He said he didn't, just watched how Andrew interacted toward everyone who came up to him.

He said one woman asked to get a pic taken with him.  Andrew obliged, my friend said, and ANDREW was the one blushing!  He gave a kid a big hair rub, and was "the coolest and nicest guy you can imagine." Never heard my friend talk about any Stanford-related person with such reverence.  He may not be a Stanford fan, but his experience with Andrew Luck certainly impacted what he thinks of Stanford and kind of re-set the bar for how people with Luck's accomplishments and celebrity should behave.

Not to get too esoteric here, but the fact Andrew Luck chooses to be the anti-celebrity, just trying to fit in and be "a regular guy" without playing up his fame, probably ensures he will be able to live as normal a life as is possible for someone with his celebrity.  The "OMG, it's Amdrew Luck!" vibe won't exist too much if it's routine for him to be seen and for others to know this is how he acts and wants to live.

Hopefully this story and the promotion of it will help Andrew continue to live that normal life he so much wants to live.

Apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  His dad is the nicest guy you can meet.  My wife knew his mom in law school and said the same about her.

Pretty wonderful when someone won't let their superhuman genes get in the way of the basic fact that they are also a cheerful and well-meaning person, with an eye towards the feelings of others.

Going to Indianapolis was probably a brobdingnagian benefit to his goal of keeping normal. I get the sense it's a very down to earth city where a star can go out and not be too bothered. I hear he bikes around town in good weather. Can you imagine the mess that would cause in some places?

The key may be that he was there, or anywhere, by himself.

[At least the story seems to imply no posse.]

The more important question: what was he buying?!?!  I'll have what he's having.

Andrew Luck must be the most self-actualized 24 year old in the world.

Re: Another Andrew Luck post... - oman - 03-11-2014

Those gingermints would be what I would buy.

Or his ladyfriends asked him to by a whole mess of sweet wine.

For anyone who hasn't heard the old Bill Clinton joke.

Clinton and the Rev. Jerry Falwell (see, I said it was old) were seated next to each other on an airplane flight. The flight attendant came around to take drink orders and Clinton ordered a scotch and soda. Falwell looked at Clinton and then said to the flight attendant "I would rather be raped by a wanton harlot than allow a drop of alcohol to pass my lips." Clinton proceeded to say to the flight attendant "I didn't realize there was a choice. I'll have what he's having. "

By sheer chance we ended up staying at the same hotel as the team before the 2011 triple-OT win against USC.  We came out of the garage elevator and Luck was the first person we saw.  I knew who it was but my son didn't.  We gave him a high five and wished him well in the game.  My kid then says "Dad, that was one of the players wasn't it?" and I told him, "You just high-fived Andrew Luck."  He was on his phone for the next 15 mins and he still talks about it to this day.

I think a lot of it has to do with the Stanford environment where you are surrounded by great people from all walks of life.  It's humbling but at the same time it allows you to be yourself and to be appreciated for that.  I love that Luck has continued to be that way and hasn't let his fame change who he is.

As for Clinton jokes, I'm partial to this one:

George Bush (the elder) and Bill Clinton happened to be in D.C. for a tribute to a foreign dignitary.  By happenstance, they were both in the same barbershop getting haircuts for the big event.  It was a bit uncomfortable for the barbers and there wasn't much, if any, of the usual chatter or banter during the haircuts.

President Clinton's clip is the first one completed, and Clinton's barber opens some (rather inexpensive) after shave and asks:  "Mr. President, would you like a splash before you head out?"

Mr Clinton responds:  "Hell, no.  If Hillary got a whiff of that she would think I was for sure gallivanting around inside a whorehouse!"

After an awkward silence, Mr. Bush's barber finishes up, picks up the same bottle of after shave and asks:

"Mr. President, would you like a splash before you head out?"

Mr. Bush responds:  "Go ahead.  Barbara has no idea what the inside of a whorehouse smells like!"

One wintery morning, Bill Clinton was out for a jog around the Whitehouse. Rounding a corner, he saw "Bill Clinton Sucks" written in yellow on the snow. Furious, Clinton tasks his secret service to investigate.

Several hours later, the seecret service returns and tells the president, " I've got really bad news. We tested the snow and the uring came from Al Gore."

"That's horrible!" exclaimed the president. "What should we so about this?"

"I'm sorry Mr. President, but the bad news is that we matched the handwriting to Hilary."

I was in 8th grade at the time, so the Clinton joke I remember was the Monica Lewinsky and a vending machine joke.

BTW Katz's Deli is the real deal. Yeah it's overpriced and touristy or whatever, but still the tastiest pastrami sandwich around.

Re: Another Andrew Luck post... - OutsiderFan - 03-11-2014

Seriously?  I make a post extolling the virtues of Andrew Luck, and it winds up with Bill Clinton jokes?

I never heard this one. Is it repeatable here?

Re: Another Andrew Luck post... - BostonCard - 03-11-2014

A few years ago (the Sun bowl season, to be precise), Harbaugh hosted a pancake breakfast for fans with kids.  I took my son Charlie there (he would have been 5 at the time).  Here's the e-mail I sent out afterwards to a bunch of my buddies/Stanford fans.  The e-mail was dated Dec. 20, 2009, so the event occurred during what would have otherwise been a winter break, in the midst of practices for the Sun Bowl:

Quote:I had a great time with Charlie at the pancake breakfast.  I had the, er, luck, to sit with Andrew Luck, Jeremy "patch" Stewart (i.e., potentially next year's backfield), and Thomas Keiser.  All three of them were great kids.  Andrew was the most at ease in the group, despite the fact that he was repeatedly getting requests for autographs and pictures.  Still, came across as a great, down-to-earth guy.  His right hand was still in a splint, though he said it was getting better every day.  He had the finger pinned - they still haven't taken the pin out.  I sat next to Stewart, who was a bit shier, but a nice guy.  Like Toby, he's an MSE (Management, Science and Engineering) major.  He will try to get a redshirt for this year, though he reported that he's actually ahead of his graduation schedule, so if it came to be, he might get a masters.  MSE might be the least rigorous of the engineering majors (the intellectual descendent of the old industrial engineering, somewhat derisively nicknamed "imaginary" engineering), but MSE majors still have to go through the engineering core, and take the relevant math and science courses which are not easy.  To be able to do that and devote time to football is nothing short of extraordinary.  To take 21 units during a football season as Toby did is an unbelievable feat.  Stewart still had his foot in a boot.  He suffered a high ankle sprain and a broken foot (bummer), but he expects to be out of the boot in the next couple weeks.

I got to speak to Tom Keiser the least, but like everyone else, he was decidedly polite and friendly.  I learned that Keiser actually played lacrosse before football.

Everyone is very excited about the Sun Bowl, as you might expect.  They are working hard; after what essentially amounted to a forced public relations stint (as I said, they were all great, but I wouldn't have blamed them if what they really wanted to do on a Sunday morning was sleep in!)  They had film and meetings starting at 11:30, so a full work day.  As [father of player] alluded to, there is a very limited Christmas break, and apparently, the only people who can go anywhere for Christmas are those who live within a 1 hour flight "because of logistics", which basically means all of the California players, and that is about it.  Kind of a bummer, especially for guys like Luck, who could probably make it to El Paso easily from their home (Luck is from Houston and Stewart from Louisiana).

Anyways, it was a great experience.  Only downside was that the track house and bookstore didn't open until 11, so I didn't get a chance to do some late Christmas shopping.

Curious about the vending machine joke, too...

Back on topic OF, I'm not surprised that Andrew was able to make such a positive impression on your $c friend.  Like most football factories, the trojan football players are put on a pedestal.    It's just not the case at Stanford, as Andrew has commented multiple times.  I think this was a big factor in Barry Sanders Jr's decision to matriculate to the Farm.  Andrew is clearly a well rounded person first and a football player second and it comes through in his interactions with others and his genuine humility.

You get a different type of "student" athlete at a place like sc.  I hope that will always be the case.  For the type of young men that we want, that school will always be "second choice."

I thought it was the following... - Mick - 03-12-2014

Back in the day, Monica Lewinski was confiding about her relationship with the president to a friend.  “What’s it like?” the friend asked.  “Oh, its kind of normal if you don’t concentrate on the fact he’s president,” Monica said.  “He even has dandruff”, Monica added.

“Well why don’t you give him Head and Shoulders?” her friend suggested, “It’s really good for dandruff.”

Monica frowned quizzically.  “What’s the matter?” her friend asked,” what is so puzzling?”

“I never thought of that before”, Monica said.  “ But how do you give shoulders?”
