i recall the squirminess on a couple of football recruits accepted at Harvard, but dinged by OU.  I don't recall the Army guys.

The Blaik cheating scandal and expulsion of 37 members of the football team essentially doomed Army football.  Until the season they expelled all but two lettermen, they had won 75.6% of their games.  Since then, they've won 43.9%.  3 national championships before, none after.  Nine undefeated seasons before, one in the 56 years since.  7 seasons of 2 or fewer losses from 1953 onward, 45 seasons of 2 or fewer losses before then.

the real issue with Army football is losing 12 times in a row to Navy.  Can you imagine what losing 12 times in a row to C.al would be like for the Cardinal faithful......

Roger Staubach, the last Service Academy player to win the Voldemort (and Navy finished #2 in the country), agrees with Cowboy Indian.  The Army guys I bought a round for in Philly last December blame Air Force. They say Army football was full of guys wanting to go into the Army Air Corps, and it has never been the same since Air Force started playing in 1956 (coached by Buck Shaw). Until Navy's recent dominance, Air Force owned the CIC.  It is pretty stark for West Point.  Since the CIC began in 1972, Air Force has won 19,  Army has won 6, and Navy has won 17.

Army's only real problem is they can't seem to beat Navy. Also, Ron George notwithstanding, I would think the recruiting pools are vastly different for Stanford and the Academies, FBS athletes or otherwise. My snarky comment would be that if that is how West Point performs when they place too much emphasis on football, heaven help them if they don't.

Bill Parcells coached air force football for one season, 1978, in which they went 3-8.  Parcells' genius contributed to the vast improvement over 1977's 2-8-1 record as well as the 2-9 record of the team in 1979

Ben Martin was the "Father of Air Force Football" beginning with his first team in 1958, which went 9-0-2 and to the Cotton Bowl. His record was sort of up and down after that but he coached there for 20 years.
The Stanford connection?...his son was a classmate of mine. Also...when we had a home-and-home with the Falcons in, I think, '68-'69, there was a small but vociferous banner-waving anti-Vietnam protest in the south end zone of the old stadium.

so Parcells was worth 50% more wins  :)
