There has to be some sort of lesson here. To put in the academic work and basketball work but not get the degree is just crazy. We spend so much time pounding Kal for its lax "academic progress" but if he's used up a four year scholarship and isn't ready or close to graduation....well, that sucks. But maybe it's just a couple of classes and he can work things out to get a better degree than one from Univ. of Puget Sound or whatever.

Bright would have to finish his degree in order to transfer and avoid the loss of a year of eligibility, so that's not a factor here.

And on a personal note, Bright has busted his butt for us for three seasons and created some great memories, especially on the drive through the NIT a couple of years ago. It seems a shame that he might not finish his career at Stanford.
What about the Allen twins? Both are guards, right? Also we have two guards in the class coming in.

There have been some Stanford athletes who transferred elsewhere to get playing time, but then transferred enough credits back to Stanford to get a Stanford degree. I think Gerald Commissiong, David Marrero, and Chris Hobbs did that. Tafiti Uso did something similar, I believe. Perhaps Bright will end up with a Stanford degree even if he goes somewhere else for his last season of eligibility.

Per ESPN, Aaron will transfer to St. Mary's for his last year of eligibility.

"Bright will take advantage of the graduate transfer rule, as he will graduate and still have one year of eligibility remaining."
So he'll have a Stanford degree before heading off to St. Mary's.

Would the transfer have been possible, had he not been graduating? If not transferring under the graduate rule, I thought players had to sit out a year, although I've been hazy under what circumstances that can be waived.
It's good for him. Hopefully he can find the kind of success at St Mary's that has eluded him at Stanford. Anyone have a view on how good the Gaels will be next year? THey're 19-8 this year, which I assume won't get them in the NCAA.

the graduate rule definitely comes into play otherwise the 5 to play 4 years rules would have impacted Bright.Â

Woo hoo! I've achieved "Frosh" status on the Cardboard! Frosh year was the best year of my life, to that point. Then it got better.

I wish him nothing but success but I won't miss him that much.
Poor defense, poor ball-handling, and streaky shooting. Yes he got hot during the NIT run, but beyond that I was unimpressed and expected better. Randle moving to PG last year was out of necessity more than choice.

Aaron Bright was a fine player, but he didn't have the athleticism to make up for his short stature. He was quick, but not quick enough to get consistent shots off against guard 4-6 inches taller than he. And he was a fine dribbler, IMO, but he could be pushed around or couldn't wrap passes around outstretched defenders.
His one move I always enjoyed, and that seemed to peak during the NIT run, was the fast break fake pass behind the back, cupping the ball, and then bring the ball back in front and lay it high off the glass. It worked really well the first 1-2 times he did it. But then the defense would figure it out and block the lay up.

Best wishes for Aaron--this is a success story, departing with his degree in hand. Exactly what Michelle Harrison did in 2010 after graduating from Tara's team. Presumably he will get a Master's degree from St. Mary's out of this.

Is it really a "transfer" if he graduates and goes to St. Mary's for graduate school? I didn't transfer to Harvard for Medical School after graduating Stanford. This is yet another example of the popular media ignoring the "scholar" part of "scholar athlete". And this is another reason why I was so happy to hear recruits announce their decisions by saying, "I intend to graduate from Stanford" rather than "I intend to play for [insert school]" or (worse) "I will take my talents to [insert school]".
