Interesting memories of another glory period - Hulk01 - 02-11-2014

I scanned the 1970 Stanford annual (“the Quad”) this afternoon, and came across several interesting tidbits.

1.  The then-Indians missed two extra points, and had a 28-yard field goal blocked, in the memorable two-point loss to USC.

2.  Oregon State acted out a true comedy of errors in their game against us.  The Beavers suffered ten turnovers: four on ints and six on fumbles. We also sacked their QB, Steve Endicott, seven times.

3.  Washington State totaled only 18 total passing yards against us, and our guys scored more points on Cougar passes (12) than the Cougs did (0).

4.  A sign of how the passing game has changed: The Quad called Dave Penhall’s 23 for 36, 321 yards passing performance against us in Big Game  “astounding” and “brilliant.”  The rules back then, including regarding contact with a receiver, helped make those numbers more exceptional then than they would be today.

5.  Cathleen Caballero, now Cathy, was a Dolly.  This alone lone marks that among the five great years in Stanford football history.

P.S.  She and I email every day.  And no.
