"the old days versus nowadays" - estephan500 - 10-30-2010

People keep making comments about "wow, we beat Washington... we used to never beat them even with our best teams."

that fact isn\'t really that amazing... we forget that the tides of history has last years crappo teams becoming the new immense monsters, and vice versa.

What I remember is laughing about the two Oregon teams, which were stuck at the bottom of the Pac-10.  And yes, the washington teams were scary.

***** If stanford truly kicks ass now, then what I want most is the Axe, unequivocally, with a giant, lopsided victory.  Last year\'s big game loss made me remember that a very good team delivers in all kinds of pressure.

Yep, I\'m sure there are some of us (myself included) who thought we would never see the day when Stanford would go to Seattle, South Bend, and LaLaLand and win by a combined 113-14.

I don\'t know how long this is going to continue, but it is sure a lot of fun while it does.

Welcome, Estephan.

We all would like the Axe more than anything else. I was really upset last year because I felt the coaching staff put more energy into preparing to USC, which was a national powerhouse, but was NOT our rival. Several classes during the 1990s graduated without ever losing to the 59ers.

When Tedford turned the program around and had the year of national prominence, many Cal fans said that their team would be so dominant that they wouldn\'t even think of us as rivals anymore.

Cal has major problems this year. No way they beat us. Oregon State lost james rodgers - I don\'t think they have the horses this year. Arizona is good, but it\'s at home and foles hasn\'t played a game in weeks.

The only teams that can challenge us are teams with tons of super-fast players, and we already played them: SC and Oregon.

I think we win the rest of our games.

Umm, you haven\'t been following Big Game for long, have you?

Oddly Red Army\'s view would fit right in on the be.ar.backer boards.  They are absolutely convinced that the C.a.l team is looking at a 1-3 or 0-4 type finish.  Over there they have some hope of beating Wazzu, but the fear is an 0-3 finish.  So either way 1-3 or 0-4 would mean no bowl game.  There are some dreaming of 2-2 type finishes by beating both Washingtons, but most are putting those dreamers in their place.

But few over there are predicting a C.a.l win against Stanford.  Only those, "Anything can happen" types are even clinging to the notion of a Big Game win.  And that is on their board, so as outlandish as RA seems, his comments would be taken with resignation over in b.ea.r land.

For me, I need to see Mansion play a game with a week of reps.  My guess is that his Wazzu road game level of play will be close to best case for him.  He was a great HS talent, so he might be OK in the end.

However after Wazzu C.a.l gets that physically demanding game against the Ducks.  That game seems to beat everyone up, so that alone would be a good thing for the team that plays C.a.l after Oregon.

Oh, hey, look that is Stanford!

So it is hard not to understand the be.ar.backer concerns.  Two weeks ago Mansion was not even ready to play at the end of that trainwreck USC game.  Now, all of the sudden, he will be leading C.a.l against the best Pac-10 teams in back-to-back weeks in November?

One can never be comfortable going into Big Game, but it is hard to imagine late October looking any better for Stanford\'s Big Game prospects.

If you look to the past, there were many years where Stanford was up and down, depending on how motivated the players were that week.  Stanford teams could be capable of losing to teams like San Jose State or Army, yet give USC a heck of battle despite being outmanned.  We often were a finesse passing team.

Then Denny Green came and something he said stuck with me.  He recruited the Northwest warriors (big OL) and said that teams that hit hard, seldom get upset.

Harbaugh\'s teams are physical and hit hard, so they are much less likely to be upset than traditional Stanford teams.
