Director's Cup -- So Far, So Good... - 76lsjumb - 01-10-2014

We ended the Fall with our biggest lead in more than 10 years:

At least we took it to Sparty in something...

Track and Field improves by at least 18 points over last year.  This article shows that all twelve Stanford athletes at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships qualified as All-Americans:

http://www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=30600&ATCLID=209435934

The women finished 7th and the men finished 12th.  This should be good for about 71 points for the women and 64 points for the men.  Last year, the women earned 73 points at the Outdoor Championships while the men earned 43.5 points at the Indoor Championships.  So, Track and Field is about 18 points ahead of last year with an opportunity to improve at the Outdoor Championships this year.

I recall that the best scores from Indoor or Outdoor count, rather than both.  Perhaps someone can confirm this.

What about the streak? Have we won an NC yet this year?

Re: Director's Cup -- So Far, So Good... - Spiny_Norman - 03-16-2014

No NCs yet this year.  Realistically, there are only 3 teams that you could consider among the NC elite in their respective sports - men's gymnastics, women's tennis and women's water polo.  The odd format for the golf championship (3 rounds of stroke play followed by match play for the top 8 teams) has led to some lower ranked teams getting hot and winning recently.  Men's golf could make some noise.  They have 2 of the top players in the country.

Men's and women's swimming will do well and will rake in Director's Cup points, but neither is much of a threat to win it all.  It would be a big surprise if any other team contends for a NC.

The scoring bounces around on this one.  I think in the end, the gurus decided that Stanford will score in 20 sports with or without counting both track seasons.  However, for some other traditional top 10 finishers (UCLA, USC, Florida) counting both could really enable them to get closer to scoring in 20 sports.  Additionally, those programs are likely to get top 10 finishes in all four track results, and one day that might be the ticket to getting to finally present the trophy to a different university.

So I am pretty sure that until Stanford losses a cup the NACDA will count both seasons.

I wonder if women's lacrosse will make some noise.  They are 5-1 and 3-0 on the road, their only loss was by one point.  They just beat two ranked opponents.  Currently ranked #19, so it may be a stretch.

I wouldn't count out men's volleyball.  Currently #5 in the MPSF, they are "only" 14-7 overall and 11-7 in league play but they have won five in a row.  They beat #3 Pepperdine at Pepperdine in four sets, and haven't been swept all season.  They swept USC 3-0 in a match recently, but they are a combined 0-4 against BYU and Long Beach State, the top two teams in the MPSF.  All matches have been quite close, however.  Middlehitter.com ranks Stanford #3 behind BYU and LBSU.  BYU is very solid, but LBSU has lost to three separate MPSF teams.

With today's hot-and-cold win against New Mexico, Cardinal Men's Basketball will place at least 17th.  Last year that place earned 50 points.  Not sure if there are any scoring changes this year given that the tournament has expanded to 68 teams.

In any event they will still contribute meaningfully relative to last year's goose egg.

Women's Swimming & Diving is in 2nd going into the last day of the national championship, but well behind Georgia and a shade in front of C.al.  Stanford has won 6 of the 14 events!  C.al only has 2 wins so far.  Saturday events include the 1650 Fr, 200 Bk, 100 Fr, 200 Br, 200 Fly, Platform diving, 400 Fr Relay.  Prelims are webcast at 9AM PDT (http://www.gophersports.com/sports/w-swim/spec-rel/2014-NCAA-Championship.html) and finals will be on ESPN3 at 5PM PDT.

The ladies have turned in really good times and been rewarded with very good results.  With only 11 swimmers & 1 diver, we've done very well but probably don't have the depth to catch Georgia on what may be our weakest day.  (Georgia sent 17 swimmers & 1 diver, C.al & Texas A&M have 16 swimmers (C.al sent a diver too), Florida 14 swimmers)

We've got some really good swimmers, and I have to say they've surprised me a bit by how well they're doing. (These wins may help in the recruiting battle versus C.al.)  I hope Saturday proves as successful.  Congrats to the athletes & coaches.

We had 2 recruits set National records this past week. One broke a Missy record.

And that diver from UGa has been a major contributor, winning both the 1m and 3m springboard events.

It has also seemed odd to me that the US has "swimming and diving" teams/championships. They seem to be completely different sports to me, and not exactly teams that hang out together either.

Re: Director's Cup -- So Far, So Good... - M T - 03-22-2014

Growing up a swimmer, I spent a fair amount of time with our divers in high school, but most of the other years, my teams had no divers.  Probably like runners in track spending time with those in the field events.

Personally, I wouldn't want to segregate the divers from the swimmers, even though I can't think of but one person (in high school) that participated in both swimming and diving and he wasn't exceptional in either.

Growing up a swimmer in another country, I never thought that diving and swimming were the same sport.

In fact, never really thought about diving at all - except perhaps while making some crazy leaps off the boards at the end of practice.

At least Track & Field has the decathlon and heptathlon, so there are some people that use the track and the field.  Also some of the best sprinters are usually good at the long jump.

Re: Director's Cup -- So Far, So Good... - Farm93 - 03-22-2014

Fencing seems destined to finish in the top 10 too, and that result will generate very valuable men's points.

Re: Director's Cup -- So Far, So Good... - 76lsjumb - 03-22-2014

I may be wrong about this -- I'm never quite sure I'm looking at the right Team Points standings in Swim Meet results -- but I think we finished second overall to Georgia in Women's Swimming/Diving...and ahead of third-place C.al.  If only the B.ears had some Olympic swimmers on their team, they might be good enough to beat us.  Oh, wait a minute...

Re: Director's Cup -- So Far, So Good... - M T - 03-22-2014

Yes, they did get 2nd, winning 4 (of 5) relays and 3 individual events, with three individual 2nd place finishes and a 3rd place in the 5th relay.

"Head coach Greg Meehan took home CSCAA Swimming Coach of the Year honors for his team's surprise finish behind national champion Georgia."

Congrats to the team!

For the long term, this should help with recruiting.

I did both unexceptionally and there were of few others in our conference that did as well.  Most of us were at small schools where it wasn't always easy to fill all three of our lanes at dual meets.

Fencing ended up 9th, probably good for 63 Cup points.  This is just one place and 3 Cup points behind last year's performance.

Today's victory over the Jayhawks gives MBB at least a 64 point improvement over last year.

The second place finish by Women's Swimming improves their Cup points from 70.5 for 8th place last year to 90 this year.

Finally, Wrestling finished tied for 40th, worth about 30 Cup points versus 35.5 for 38th place last year.

To sum up: -3 +64 +19.5 - 5.5 = 75 point improvement so far for Winter sports over last year to date.
