Louisville supposed targeting Mason - stupac2 - 01-04-2014

As per the ultimate reliable news source, "some guy's twitter citing an anonymous source": https://twitter.com/BryanDFischer/status/419663874158108673

Quote:BryanDFischer Solid choice. RT @coachingsearch: Louisville is targeting Stanford defensive coordinator Derek Mason, per source. http://bit.ly/1axc7qX

Not surprising (though it is somewhat surprising it took this long for his name to come up). I think there are fairly low odds he takes another CFB job, but who knows!

He's not going to Louisville.

Mason said there is one job he covets and that is between him and his wife.  Given he's from Arizona, and has never set foot in Kentucky, I feel confident saying Louisville isn't the one.

The Louisville AD Tom Jurich was the AD at Northern Arizona when Mason was a player there.

This has got to be the most impressive display of obscure but informative knowledge I've ever seen on the CARDboard.  And that's saying something.

Spiny, how the hell did you know this?

Publius, I wish I could say that I had total recall of all college football media guides.  But credit for the NAU connection goes to Bruce Feldman on twitter.  I just did a little research to confirm that they were both at NAU at the same time.

Re: Louisville supposed targeting Mason - OutsiderFan - 01-04-2014

While the fact the Louisville AD was AD at NAU when Mason played there is interesting, how many ADs develop relationships with players on their teams that would make them have some affinity toward hiring them as head coaches 20 years later?

My suspicion is guys like Feldman find these obscure facts and use them to stir the gossip pot.  It seems incredibly unlikely Derek Mason's "one job" is Louisville because he once played at a school who had the same AD at the time.

Re: Louisville supposed targeting Mason - washingtonismoney - 01-04-2014

I suspect that's taking that comment a bit literally. People and coaches say that sort of stuff all the time. The spirit -- "I really enjoy this job" -- is what to take from that statement. If the circumstances are right, people will simply rationalize themselves out of any cognitive dissonance. (For example, Mason could say to himself that going to Louisville prepares him to take that "one job," whatever it is.)

In reality, Charlie Strong's built up Louisville's talent base pretty well -- even despite Bridgewater leaving -- it pays well, and they're moving to a new (more powerful, but not stacked) conference. Looks pretty attractive to me! I bet he goes if the job's offered. And that's fine; we anticipated that anyway. I, for one, welcome our new defensive coordinating overlord Lance Anderson.*

Whatever that job is, it doesn't mean he wouldn't take another job that would better position him for it than being the Willie Shaw Director of Defense.

As much as I love Mason, I can't see how he turns down the Louisville job.  It's in a power conference with beatable teams. And good for him. He's been terrific for us and his success elsewhere makes Stanford an attractive destination for assistants.

I always thought that Kotulski, the LB coach might have been brought in by Shaw in part to groom as a possible replacement for Maeon, whenever he should be lured away (which is bound to happen sometime). Coach K had experience as a pretty successful Defensive Coordinator, albeit at a small school, Lehigh. And he's coached with Mason, now, to learn his approach. I'll go out on a limb and speculate that he might be next up.

Re: Louisville supposed targeting Mason - washingtonismoney - 01-05-2014

Supposedly Louisville's top target is Rich Rodriguez: https://twitter.com/footballscoop/status/419923869227417601

That might only temporarily get us out of trouble, with Mason being an Arizona native.
