Has anyone seen shaw postgame comments ... I love those transcripts. Want to gauge the denial or lack of it ... See how defensive he gets about play calling ... Or not.

I like the comments from all of them. Don't think running up the middle was working and I think adjustments should've been made quicker. It's easy to judge from the couch, but man I feel like Shaw could've made a few better play calls. We should've been more creative with QB runs, fakes, outside runs, FB runs, just anything different than Gaffney up the middle when it didn't work the first 10 times.

I honestly thought a flea flicker would have worked great.
I think another wildcat would have worked great, had we run it again and passed to the split end...who was abandoned by the CB when it became clear it was a wildcat.

I think the problem with plays such as those you suggest is that the Spartans were getting too much penetration. Also, there seemed to be much more confusion in exchanges between Hogan and Gaffney and others. Our ball handling seemed off.

I think the bottom line is this -- Michigan State has the best defensive of any team we played this season, and no one else comes close. During the timeout before the final fourth down play, I wondered aloud about the quick pitch out play we've seen a few times before in those situations, usually to Wilkerson. We even had the right formation for it, so after the fact I thought it would've been a good call. But when I watched the recording and looked at the play several times, I'm not as sure anymore. Sure, the linebackers were completely selling out on the dive, but the corners on both sides were protecting the edge. I don't know if Gaffney could've gotten outside or not.

That is right. Not only were the LBs selling out to stop the run, the secondary was too. I think what was needed all game were quick slants and ten yard passes over the middle to TEs and RBs into the hole vacated by the crashing LBs. But those are the passes that Hogan has not thrown this year.
Interestingly, when we had the Nunes/Hogan controversy, Hogan was known for being a much more accurate short to mid range passer and Nunes for throwing the long ball better. At the beginning of this season I thought a key to our success was whether Hogan could learn to throw the long ball. He did--quite well. What continues to mystify me is what happened to his excellent possession passing that he did so well during his first year. Did it atrophy solely due to the loss of our TEs, was it Hogan getting out of practice at doing it since he focused so heavily on correcting his one flaw (the long ball), or was it the scheme? But at least we know that Hogan is capable of excellent possession passing-- and it should be a priority to redevelop that skill for next year.Â

We had a shovel pass for ~3 yds at some point, iirc. CornFed is right, the defensive penetration would have killed things.

For my money, a play-action slant over the middle should have been tried.

Quote:TYLER GAFFNEY: You know, we take pride in that. 4th and 1 is what we preach on, what we do, what Stanford football is all about. You have to give it to Michigan State for stuffing that because everybody in the building knew exactly what was coming, a run was coming up the middle, and it was a test of wills, and they got the better of us.
While I generally feel okay about it on that one play - what bothers me is that too often everybody in the building knew what was coming!
