MBB: Michigan 68 Stanford 65 -

Michigan threatened to pull away most of the second half, and was probably the better team overall, but Chasson Randle flicked into a transcendental state, scoring 18 points in the second half and carrying the team offensively.

I can't quite believe it, but I watched almost the entire second half, definitely the longest stretch of Stanford basketball that I've watched in probably five years or so. Things just might be looking up...

Had a similar thought. That was a quality loss in a game that Stanford would have been lucky to steal. It was a very reasonable weekend. Given the travel demands I am not sure any team outside of the top 15 team could have done much better than get a split.Â
Stanford likely needs to go 12-6 in conference with a single win in the Pac-12 tournament to get into the NCAA tournament. At 22-10, they could get a 9 or 10 seed. I suspect there are more than 6 losses left on the schedule, but it could happen.

I wouldn't discount Walvy. They have a decent team this year with a good coach and players that play hard. They have a very good shot of making the tourney this year, IMO.

Irrespective of Michigan's quality, I'm not sure this team is a cut above previous Dawkins squads.
Here are KenPom's thoughts:
2013-14 (44)
2012-13 (44)
2011-12 (36)
2010-11 (98)
(Keep in mind that Dawkins's teams have tended to fade by the end of the year; I've been optimistic many times based on KenPom's rankings heading into conference play only for the Cardinal to lose its luster.)
ESPN's also introduced a "basketball power index", presumably based on similar principles as its football and soccer power indices:
2013-14 (45)
2012-13 (41)
2011-12 (58)
The problem, from a overall program perspective, is that the forties are a bubble range --Â and of course a team could go on a hot streak and make it into the tournament without being better from a fundamental perspective. And if we want the team to get back to where it was during the Montgomery years, that can't happen; it's clear that Dawkins can't lift the team beyond an average level.
