Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - Redrum - 12-21-2013

Down the last minute or so of the game.  Fumbled in own territory...got a reprieve on review.  Fumbled again.  Didn't have time to watch any more.  Saw it just in passing.  Didn't have to watch to know what happened, though.    Colorado St. scores to win 48-45.

Add:  Colorado St. scored 11 points in the last 2.5 mins.  TD/ 2-pt. conversion and FG.    Coug'n it, Coug'n it.

Wazzu fans your long ordeal is over. You are rewarded with a bowl game. How could that be a bad thing.

Oh, wait . . .

Re: Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - Farm93 - 12-21-2013

Next time someone writes that Coach Shaw is too conservative during a game, I will happily replay the last 4 minutes of that game.

What a joke.  A team so incapable of running the ball and playing smart conservative football that they literally could not hold a 15 point lead.  Terrible clock management, terrible on field decisions...oh, but hey, at least Coach Leach is aggressive and entertaining.  ::)

Wow . . . If the phrase "couged it" didn't already exist, it would have to be invented to describe what just happened.

Agreed. A solid running game could have kept the game clock under control and helped prevent... whatever the heck just happened.

To quote Weird Al Yankovic's "I Lost on Jeopardy": WSU brought "shame and disgrace to your family name for generations to come."

Re: Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - OutsiderFan - 12-21-2013

Actually, I think the correct spelling is "Cooging" it.  It's a derogatory term, steeped in as much disrespect as possible.

Leach has some serious "'splainin'" to do.  Why not just run the clock and take a knee so no defender can touch the ball?  They could have snapped the ball with about 1:40 left.  Take three knees, run the about 30 seconds off the clock on each snap, time runs out, with the worst scenario being punting with like 10 seconds left.

Just an embarrassing loss for the Pac-12.

Re: Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - Hank 91 - 12-21-2013

Here's how it played out:

Up by eight and with Colorado State having used all their timeouts, instead of a simple run -- or even taking a knee -- the Cougs went with a read option and Holliday was stripped. Replays correctly overturned it, so the Cougs came out and ran the ball again and the SAME Colorado State defender stripped the ball on the very next play. That was crazy enough, but it got worse.

After CSU pumped it in for a touchdown, they obviously had to go for two. Naturally, they ran the Statue of Liberty, and it worked. (The try was originally called no good. The ball carrier was strung out wide left and dove to touch the ball to the pylon. It was clearly good to the naked eye, but the official standing two feet away ruled him down. Replay overturned it.) But it got worse.

Overtime, right? Wrong. CSU kicked off with 33 seconds to play... and the Cougs fumbled during the return, giving the ball back to CSU at about the 30. They ran a couple plays before hitting the field goal at the gun.

Too bad. Should've been a 2-0 start for the Pac-12.

Re: Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - Farm93 - 12-21-2013

Hank91 - That was a nice try, but it actually was WORSE than that.

On the up by 8 kickoff the returner literally took a dive at the 18 so that he would not get touched.  Likely a touch too conservative but not a crazy idea.  I guess he got his late game coaching in HS because that smart conservative philosophy was clearly not shared by members of the offense.  The one bad thing about his quick dive to the turf was it stopped the clock in a way that suggested a 4th down play MIGHT be needed.  If he ran around for a few seconds, maybe even Leach would have realized the team only needed 3 slow victory formation snaps.

After Holliday's fumble was overturned, the play clock was set to run with 2:01 left in the game.  A decent Jr. High coach would have realized that the clock was going to run and would have told the team to wait until 2-5 seconds were on the play clock, especially after the 1st down nightmare.  But noooooo Wazzu couldn't wait, so even though the clock started at 25, they literally snapped the ball with 21 seconds to spare.  Just crazy.  They deserved to get another fumble.  Additionally even though Holliday was stripped by #56, the Cougs decided to run a play right at the very same defender.  This time the FB had the ball I believe, but he felt the need to get an extra yard rather than stay with the ball.  Ugh!

Technically, Wazzu was hurt by the whole first fumble overturn because the clock stopped with the initial ruling.  So instead of getting the clock to go down to 0 seconds with 3 plays (2nd at 1:25, 3rd at 0:42, likely not requiring any play for 4th) the replay essentially gave Colorado State 15 extra seconds since the play clock was set to 25 seconds after the stoppage.  Still, even with that time bonus the proper set of plays seemed clear.  Run pretty slow to develop running plays at 1:36 & 0:51 and then call a time-out with 6-9 seconds left in the game.  At that point a nice bouncing line drive punt that the entire team can surround and watch bounce would have ended the game.  It was definitely possible for the QB to take 3 snaps and stall for a few seconds with each play before taking a knee.  The fumbles, overturns and last second FG should never have happened.

Good news - Since Leach won't be taking that UT opening or any other high profile job, WSU can save some money on his contract renegotiation.

For all reasons listed above, whatever credibility WSU's math department ever had just flew out the window for me.  Absolutely horrendous.  I mean, Colorado State, folks.  CSU.

There's no need to denigrate CSU.  Defensively, they are pretty hapless.  Their offense, both run and pass are very highly rated.

WSU's meltdown was bad enough regardless of their competition.  And Leach's role in that meltdown is amazingly incompetent.

Re: Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - yvonne - 12-22-2013

CSU is a team that lost to Colorado.

Re: Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - fullmetal - 12-23-2013

Sorry if I offended you, CornFed.  CSU plays in a lower-tier conference and is, as Yvonne points out, generally inferior to Colorado most years (when was the last time CSU won against Colorado?), and Colorado is far from competitive, either now or in the former Big 12 alignment.  I'm sure their guys play hard, but WSU had no business losing that game if normal clock-bleeding procedures were employed.

Last season.

Re: Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - CornFed - 12-23-2013

No offense taken, FM.  Actually, Yvonne's point is a quick, accurate summary.  I was, in a fairly clumsy way, adding a perspective on CSU's turnaround in recent years.  Also, I meant to emphasize that the Coogs meltdown had little to do with CSU being inept.  And to think - I was a Communications minor at the Farm.  ;D

Re: Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - martyup - 12-23-2013

Is this the first "Coug'd it" under Leach?  If so, that's strange.  It's like a curse.

Re: Can't believe it. The Cougs "Coug-ed It" - TreeWeird - 12-23-2013

WSU blew a late lead and lost to Colorado last year.
