This is an interesting question.  I was shocked to run into him at the Stanford tailgate at the Rose Bowl last year.

Re: A question I'm sure everyone here is asking... - Farm93 - 12-19-2013

He sits in a season ticket area, quite near my seats actually.  I do not believe he attend Indiana Catholic game, but there could have been more to that story.

It will be interesting to see, but I suspect he will cheer for MSU.  Just as I would expect Dawkins to cheer for Duke 10 years after he stops coaching for Stanford.

"How in the BL** FU** did Tyrone Willin.gham beat Nick Saban 38-0?"

Always edifying discourse over on the MSU board.

Any reason you censored "blue" as well?

He was obviously being sensative to the lurking smurf CARDboarders. If I were a smurf, I would choose to read this as "blah".

Re: A question I'm sure everyone here is asking... - yvonne - 12-19-2013

as in blah people?

Re: A question I'm sure everyone here is asking... - PrinceLightfoot - 12-19-2013

Perhaps, but it is more fitting as a reference to the quality of the word it precedes.

Ty will certainly root for his alma mater over the school he used to coach football at.

I find it fascinating that a former coach attends games as a regular season ticket holder. How bizaare. I can imagine former coaches, long retired, watching from the press box or in a suite or something. But just milling about?

His reported attendance of the Rose Bowl last year and regular attendance to football games would suggest some level of devotion/loyalty/nostalgia connecting him to LSJU. Or maybe it's morbid curiosity in a job that perhaps he now recognizes he should not have left so easily.

Regardless, I have no doubt he'd be rooting for MSU. I would in the same situation.

Oh, I don 't know ... I've seen John Ralston enjoying the game in good but regular season ticket holder seats.  It might depend upon just who you want to watch a game with.  The press box seats might come with unwanted baggage.

Re: A question I'm sure everyone here is asking... - yvonne - 12-20-2013

Who does John Ralston root for in Big Game? What about in the Bill Walsh Classic?

Re: A question I'm sure everyone here is asking... - Leftcoast - 12-20-2013

Good question!  Ralston played football under Waldorf at Ca.l, coached Stanford, Plunkett and Bunce in successive Rose Bowls and was part of yet another rebirth of Spartan football in the 90s (and had an office there until recently).  Divided loyalties indeed.

All I can say is when I saw him at the games he was wearing a Red Sweater (and a helpful name tag at one of 'em).  His seats were near the top of the first level and a few seats off the aisle, shady side.  No one really bothered him but there was sure a lot of people nudging each other and an occasional handshakes when he walked by.  No doubt the seating helped an octogenarian avoid the hustle and bustle of the stairs after a game.  Although With the tunnels and nearby parking our stadium is easily accessible.

Unless I'm mistaken, hopelessly-overmatched Gerry Faust attended Notre Dame home games for years after his debacle coaching years.

If I see him, I'll fake punting him in the crotch.

OK, sure, but it took less than 10 years for him to realize there is something special about Stanford.  Stanford was not his alma mater, so I remained so perplexed about the situation here.  Have none of you split up with a partner/employer?  It is never easy, and inevitably the other party feels hurt and betrayed.  Those that carry a grudge for too long just look pathetic, and especially in this situation given the relative success of Stanford and TW over the last several years.

I personally expect every football or basketball coach to move on almost immediately, so I guess I am more forgiving of the history.  Dawkins, for example, is here until he wins and then he will be gone in less than 10 seconds.  I will bet good money that when a newly successful Dawkins leaves he will immediately point out that Stanford will never be able to have sustained Duke University type success, unlike "insert name of future employer school here".  And I think many of us found it troubling when Dawkins talked too glowingly about Duke during in his early years.  Far better to forget that old program and praise your new employer, especially if your new employer has that other program on the schedule.  FWIW - At least TW won while he was at Stanford and gave "us" 7 Big Game wins.  I only wish Dawkins could have given us 7 consecutive wins over any major rival before he jumps out of Maples.

Also, FWIW2, during the Oregon game few were more passionate in my section than "Ty".  As Stanford still lacks a super loyal season ticket fanbase, I am happy to have him in my section.

I don't expect him to cheer for Stanford during the Rose Bowl, but my guess is he would if Michigan State were not the opponent.  There are not many at Stanford that can honestly say they have done more for the program and that is before his "contributions" to ND and UW which have actually helped Stanford too.

I'll never forgive him for the Seattle Bowl loss to Georgia Tech.

7 Big Game wins

My go-to card for smack talk against 2 annual rivals.

Took us to the Rose Bowl when we never expected the kind of success we have had lately.

If they lined up former coaches for me to spill beer on, I would be out before I got to him.
