Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - AthleticsDynasty - 12-19-2013

QB - Hogan
Crower
HB - ??? biggest worry
FB - Ward
Skov
TE - Cotton
Hopkins
WR - Cajuste and Montgomery
Rector, Owusu and Pratt
OT - Peat and Flemming
Murphy and Davidson
OG - Garnett and Caspers
Bright and Bonnell
C - Mcfadden
Oser

DE - Kaumatule - H.Anderson
Lueders and Lealao
NT - Parry
Hayes

Hemschoot and Perez
OLB - Vaughters and K.Anderson
Kalambayi and Tyler
Safety - Richards and a big concern if Reynolds leaves
Nickle - Hoffpauir
Harris

Harris and Thomas

I think the offense will lead the team in 2014 as long as we get the runningback figured out and Cotton emerges as the receiving TE

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - needle - 12-19-2013

On the O-line, I don't expect McFadden or Bonnell to return (I believe they both walked at Senior Day).

Here's a link to a nice tribute video to the guys that walked:

2013 Senior Tribute: Honoring Shayne Skov, Trent Murphy, Ben Gardner and others

Quote: Here's to the 2013-14 senior class: Usua Amanam, Dillon Bonnell, Barry Browning, Devon Carrington, Jackson Cummings, Kevin Danser, Davis Dudchock, Chris Gaertner, Tyler Gaffney, Ben Gardner, Ryan Hewitt, Jarek Lancaster, Josh Mauro, Conor McFadden, Trent Murphy, Keanu Nelson, Josh Nunes, David Olson, Eddie Plantaric, Ed Reynolds, Shayne Skov, Cole Underwood, Anthony Wilkerson, Khalil Wilkes, and David Yankey.

Interestingly, this suggests that Seale might be back. Would he possibly move to the secondary?

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - AthleticsDynasty - 12-19-2013

I think it would a mistake if Mcfadden has eligibility left and isn't on the team next year

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - OutsiderFan - 12-20-2013

Seeing some talk on another board about how Fleming could move to RG and Murphy could take over at RT.  Is this purely fan speculation, or has anyone connected to the program hinted at this?

It seems Fleming moving to Guard would be a move that could benefit his NFL prospects, and at the same time, Murphy's as well.

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - needle - 12-20-2013

Just as an aside, Stanford has 14 guys on the roster listed at 6-foot-6 or taller, including both Murphy and Fleming. Michigan State has nine.

I think Sarkisian was talking a couple years ago about this -- he had his staff do a study and found that Oregon and Stanford were, like, two of the top ten teams in height.

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - profro - 12-20-2013

I agree with the starters, with some slight mods...

QB - Hogan, Burns/Lloyd
HB - Wright, Sanders
FB - Skov, Ward
TE - Cotton, Hopkins, Hooper
WR - Montgomery, Cajuste, Owusu, Rector, Pratt
OT - Peat, Flemming, Murphy, Davidson
OG - Garnett, Caspers, Bright, Bonnell
C - Mcfadden, Oser

DE - Kaumatule, H. Anderson, Lueders, Lealao
NT - Parry, Nwafor, Hayes
ILB - Tarpley, Martinez, Hemschoot, Perez
OLB - Vaughters, K. Anderson, Davis, Kalambayi, Tyler
Safety - Richards, [Reynolds (recent history helps our cause for defensive players staying that extra year)], Simmons
Nickle - Hoffpauir, Harris
CB - Carter, Lyons, Harris, Thomas

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - CowboyIndian - 12-20-2013

Why is Shuler missing from a couple of these lists?

along the same lines, why no mention of Olugbode?  is he leaving this year?

I am surprised that McFadden is not returning for a fifth year.  My understanding is that the competition between he and Wilkes was tight in the fall.  Must mean that Shuler and/or Oser are developing nicely?  I seem to recall that Shuler needn't to bulk up quite a bit.

People are commenting as if it was the coach's decision for McFadden not to return.  Do we know if that is true?  Maybe the young man has decided himself to get on with the rest of his life.

Could be.  I have no idea.

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - 97fan - 12-23-2013

Just a guess, but might it be that McFadden wants to be involved in his dad's 2014 U.S. Senate campaign?

http://mikemcfadden.com/

If I remember correctly, we lost out on a fifth year from another offensive lineman a few years ago when Bert McBride went to work on his mom's campaign for governor of Florida.

Damn these football parents and their political aspirations! Can't they wait until their sons' NCAA eligibility has expired?!?

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - Bruce Wang - 01-01-2014

Here's an idea: change to a spread attack next year.  We have an abundance of talent at receiver.  Barry Sanders is more of a scat back.  I get the feeling this is a bad idea, but am not sure why.

Well, it's a tough challenge. Much of the personnel suggests a more passing-oriented attack. But Hogan is so boom-or-bust as a thrower and our program is oriented to power running. Shaw et al. have some things to ponder. More throwing? More quarterback runs? As I've mentioned a few times, I think you have to at least ponder a quarterback change.

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - martyup - 01-01-2014

Can we really say that Hogan had a bad game today?  He only threw 18 passes and completed 10 for 143 yards.  The one INT was not his fault.  He put that ball right into Rector's hands.  There were at least 2 dropped passes that should have been caught.  When he ran, he averaged over 5 ypc.  I don't think we can blame Hogan for this loss.

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - washingtonismoney - 01-01-2014

It's not so much that Hogan played poorly as the coaches seem to fear the possibility of his playing poorly. Maybe that's unjustified.

Exactly.  In big games, we seem to tighten up and not let Hogan do his thing.  He is a great scrambler and he's good at finding secondary receivers.  He can do neither when he's simply handing the ball to Gaffney.  With some decent TEs to throw to, he would be much more of a passing threat.  Hopefully we'll get the TEs more involved in next season's offense.

Re: Predict the 2014 Depth Chart - BostonCard - 01-01-2014

Maybe it would be more accurate to say that the coaches don't trust the passing game as a whole?  On the into, it was thrown into double coverage but the db made a great play.
