ND's Courtship of Dalton Schultz - Hank 91 - 12-18-2013

I'm not really worried that 477 letters will sway him, but the video gives you a peek at his personality.

It also gives one a big look into Notre Dame recruiting process.

Mind boggling that the focus is "We send players to the NFL" and not "You will get an education and be part of the ND family".

Let's give Kelly credit for being honest.

What I love is the irony.  We find the trickster figure in mythologies everywhere.  In Irish folklore, the trickster  takes the form of leprechauns, and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow is just their most famous trick.

Okay, this is just getting pathetic: http://espn.go.com/college-sports/recruiting/football/story/_/id/10165891/notre-dame-fighting-irish-sends-477-handwritten-letters-recruits-pots-gold

Recruits posting on twitter the letter count from one school to elicit "retaliation" from other schools. I want to land good recruits, but part of me hopes we're not using these kinds of ploys that prey on the basest of teenage boy emotions...

I would be shocked to see Stanford stoop this low.  This is one of those times when refusing to be different is what makes one differentiated.

Re: ND's Courtship of Dalton Schultz - Griffins78 - 12-19-2013

He's coming for his official visit in January, which I think is when all our top recruits come together. He went on this official visit to ND a week ago - not during a game.

He came to the Stanford ND football game on an unofficial visit with his parents - they drove all the way here. In his video he was giddy about his visit to Stanford and getting to hang with the players after the game. He was more subdued about his ND official.

Just from watching those videos I had a pretty good feel for Stanford being his first choice.

Schultz confirms that the Leprechauns' trick will not sway him.  He's also got some seriously good hand-eye coordination if that's him playing Call of Duty.  Even more impressed if that was a simultaneous narration.

Based on what he's saying, I also got the impression that he prefers Stanford's recruiting style.

Also I swear I haven't sent him any Facebook messages.  Isn't that a NCAA booster violation?

Re: ND's Courtship of Dalton Schultz - yvonne - 12-21-2013

It's a violation for boosters to contact prospects even after they've signed a LOI until they enter school. After that it's just kind of weird — a bunch of middle aged people clamoring onto an eighteen-year-old? Seriously?

You really have to wonder about the people who do that stuff. Don't they have anything better to do that bother kids about their choice of college?

The only time I've contacted an athlete was Williamson after the Fiesta Bowl, saying to hang in there and that the fans still appreciated him. I think that one was reasonable.

Re: ND's Courtship of Dalton Schultz - fullmetal - 12-24-2013

Long lives the Stanford vs. University of South Bend recruiting war.  The anecdotes support the contention that continued contact with recruits can help sway their decisions even after an LOI has been signed, even if the recruit knows that the continued contact is shady.  Basic psychology, I guess.
