Michael Thomas & lurking - CapitolHillCard - 12-16-2013

Nice story by Peter King on Michael Thomas's first action in the NFL:

"A safety playing cornerback in his first NFL game, in his first NFL quarter, against Tom Brady, in single coverage against one of Brady’s favorite targets."

As an aside, I am a Stanford alum & long-time reader of Cardboard, but first-time poster. I gather that qualifies me as a lurker around these parts and I will need to earn my keep with 99 more posts before being admitted into the private board. Looking forward to it.

CHC - Good find on Thomas' post-49er adventures and welcome aboard.  After that first bracing dip the waters just aren 't that cold!

Re: Michael Thomas & lurking - FarmBoy - 12-16-2013

I just watched the game highlights on NFL.com. The pick was nice, but the pass break up in the end zone was more impressive to me. It's pretty amazing that he could step in a game like that, after not being on the team for a full weak, let alone never playing in a live game, and holding his own against Brady's offense. It makes you wonder what else Harbaugh et al are hiding on their practice squad...

Question: how do you even get signed off a practice squad like that? Did the Dolphins just notice him during pre-season games (assuming he played in those) and file away that info in the off chance they need a back up safety? I'm really curious about NFL team back offices and how they gather and manage data on players.

Here's the official Stanford report from the weekend: http://www.gostanford.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=209342285&DB_OEM_ID=30600

It looks like 18 former players saw action last week. Stanford could have several alums making deep playoff runs, if not Super Bowl wins this year.

Re: Michael Thomas & lurking - CompSci87 - 12-16-2013

Maybe the agents of the practice squad players actively publicize them to the other teams too? I imagine that's allowed seeing that other teams are allowed to sign them.

Re: Michael Thomas & lurking - FarmBoy - 12-16-2013

I'm sure the agents are doing their best at marketing, but when all you have is game from 2011 (his last year) and some reps during preseason games as the most recent gamefilm, the marketing gets harder.

I wonder what kinds of hours the GM works during the season?

Great for Michael Thomas! The clip below shows more of Michael's and his teammates' reactions to the interception. How great to come in as the newcomer and save the game (and have your teammates and coach not even really know your name).

Philbin not knowing his name in the press conference afterward is probably the best part of the story. That just makes it.

Re: Michael Thomas & lurking - FarmBoy - 12-16-2013

Quote:a surreal climax to his first NFL game.

Peaked in his first game? Ouch.

Quote:Season-ending injuries to cornerbacks Dimitri Patterson and R.J. Stanford

Fun coincidence.

Re: Michael Thomas & lurking - GoodGrief - 12-16-2013

http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/0ap1000000298392/Week-15-Patriots-vs-Dolphins-highlights also features the touchdown pass-breakup that Michael Thomas made two plays earlier. It's pretty sweet because the Patriot receiver basically caught it and MT manages to push the ball out of his grasp with his fingertips.

Re: Michael Thomas & lurking - fullmetal - 12-16-2013

That was Amendola on the other end of Thomas's pass break-up, and it was Austin Collie who found his reception intercepted by Thomas.  Great story.  I think most of us who followed Thomas at Stanford knew he was capable of that though.  The article does mention that Thomas was victimized for at least a few completions before the pass break-up...Brady must have been feeling lucky.

Oddly enough, I've been seeing a lot of former Stanford players tweeting congratulations to Thomas using an incorrect Twitter username.

Haven't seen garvin on this thread.  I fear that Michael Thomas may be dead to him.

Really great game for MT3, and I love the post-game interview. I'm happy for him.

Re: Michael Thomas & lurking - Nan3cy - 12-16-2013

He really comes across as a solid guy.

With all the Stanford guys making in the pros, I'm running out of teams to root against...

Re: Poor Michael Thomas - Bruce Wang - 12-17-2013

He's not under contract, so maybe this performance will make some other teams notice.

I thought you had to sign a player to claim him off another team's practice squad. Maybe just for the current season, though.

Re: Poor Michael Thomas - fullmetal - 12-17-2013

I suppose it could be a several-game contract versus a rest-of-the-season contract.  But Michael Thomas did sign something to get onto the 53-man roster.  garvin would characterize such a contract as a deal with the devil.
