Local game watching Recommendations? -
Trevmiesterj - 12-02-2013
I will be in the Republic of PA for the game this Saturday with family and wish not to squint at the Pac-12 Championship projected by my parents 25" Magnavox.
My known Palo Alto and surrounding areas for quality game viewing experiences are limited to Rozzoti's, the Goose and Old Pros. I am looking for a good family friendly place (My 10 year old will be rocking his Red Zone shirt) so guidance will be appreciated and taken to heart. With the Big-10 championship on at roughly the same time (and to a lesser note, the ACC championship), multiple screens will be a preferred. Good craft beer selection and apps and an involved Stanford cheering clientele would also be a bonus.
Any favs that could be suggested outside of those stated?

Give them a new TV for Christmas and watch the game with the parents.

Well, they are actually Jewish but thanks for the suggestion. I will consider it.

Again, I will consider it.Â
If anyone would like to offer something other than suggestions of a holiday purchase I would still appreciate.Â

I bet they'd be showing the game on campus at whatever the CoHo has become or maybe the Axe and Palm, right?

The Oasis is another spot you've probably heard of. Gordon Biersch in downtown PA will have multiple TVs (and good beer). Of course, I'd probably just go to the Goose, heh.

The Boardwalk is on El Camino in Mountain View/Los Altos on the west side just past San Antonio. It's a family-friendly restaurant that often shows sports on their many tvs. I once spent the better part of the day there watching NCAA basketball games and it worked out just fine.

The Buck Cardinal Club has been holding their viewing parties at The Patio (412 Emerson St.) The food is passable and it is very kid friendly. They usually have all tvs tuned to the Stanford game, but it is pretty low key, so I'm sure they would switch one over to other games so people can follow them. You also don't have to be a member of the Buck Club to attend. You get a discount onf food if you are a member, but there are many non-members there.Â
I usually go with some friends to Rudy's Pub at 117 University. It is a pub and charges a cover later on Fri. and Sat. nights, but I think it might be kid friendly during game time. It doesn't draw a brobdingnagian football watching crowd, so it is easier to get seats and enjoy the game. Very friendly staff.Â
Cheers,
Pete F.

Steins Beer Garden (
http://steinsbeergarden.com/) in downtown Mountain View has an excellent craft beer selection. They have one giant TV up high, and several other TVs scattered around. It's more of a "gastropub" than a sports bar, so the food and beer will be better.

Yes there is an eatery at Tressider that serves alcohol, burgers, burritos, and other things. The place also has 7-10 TV monitors. One of the rooms has four TVs positioned so that you can watch 4 sporting events at once. The crowd was rather respectful when I checked things out one afternoon before one of our evening games. Can't go wrong watching on campus, IMO.
Though it might really be best to buy a holiday season HDTV. 40" TVs are now available down at $300, and a full 4 hours at a sports bar could push $100. With the TV you'd get the benefit of a gift to family members and not spend too much more. Just sayin'.

I like the campus option since the wife and kids haven't been there yet and my daughter would much rather bowl (if the lanes are still there) than listen to us cheer and groan. However, The Buck Cardinal Club, the O, and Rudy's are good options. I will probably stay close to home as in no way do I want to turn the ignition over with some suds in me.
So I gave the folks a call and asked them about their TV. Apparently they did recently upgrade to a mid-size flat screen so they weren't interested in a replacement-Dad asked for an iPad instead ::). Additionally, I am not fond of purchasing a television for the "big game" as I see it as a bit of a curse, but that's another story. If the consensus is to hang at the homestead then I will flow accordingly, but I do enjoy the atmosphere and banter of an establishment.
Incredible the prices on flat panel screens these days-I have a mental image of Chinese factories resembling what the Once-ler built for his Thneeds chugging out an unending line of cheap tubes amongst blanketing smog.

Dude. Gone since sometime in the Kennedy administration. (That is, Donald Kennedy, but still.) And I've also got bad news about the Amber Lantern, Dinah's Shack, L'Omelette, The Winery, Shakey's and the Beta Theta Pi house.
I figured it had to be gone but didn't want to check the sources on the internet-many good memories there.
At least I can head downtown, play with the electric trains, listen to the talking myna bird and get a free balloon at Rapps.Â

Hmm, if you're from that far back, we should also point out that the Old Pro has moved to Ramona St. in downtown Palo Alto (where Ramona's used to be) and is perhaps more family friendly now than the old dumpy-looking location on El Camino.

Wut? I said
to Ramona, not
from Ramona.
Years ago, Old Pro was on El Camino near the intersection with Page Mill. Later they added a second location on Ramona (formerly Ramona's, and maybe something else I've forgotten in between). Still later they closed the El Camino location.

I have been back a few times since Old Pro moved into Ramona's so familiar with it. I am not really a Gordon Biersch guy but have been to and liked the Empire Tap room.Â
Also 4141 El Camino looks interesting and since the wife and I will be staying at the Country Inn a couple of nights that looks to be a good one to visit.Â

I was at the shutdown party of the Old Pro on El Camino. A sad day. A great place to see people wearing Brown's jerseys and an occasional Phoenix fan on Sundays.
My finest barfly moment was sitting there with my friends at closing and the manager threw me the keys and said to hide them outside as he left.

The Empire closed, Pizzera Delfina moving in early next year
