Notre.Dame stats - terry - 11-26-2013

A few observations about Notre.Dame's statistics (sorry, this turned out longer than I expected) --

Total offense:

ND averages 410.8 yards per game of total offense, which is similar to Stanford's average (403.1).

Like Stanford, ND runs a relatively low number of plays per game -- 65.5 plays per game, 105th in the nation (compared to 64.5, 113th for Stanford). Also like Stanford, ND's average yards per play is good -- 6.27 yds/play, 31st in the nation (compared to 6.25, 33rd for Stanford).

ND converts 41.9% of third downs, which ranks 52nd (compared to 51.6%, 10th for Stanford).

Pass offense:

Rees completes a relatively low percentage -- 54.4%. But his yards per completion are very high -- 15.1 yds/comp., which ranks 6th in the nation. Rees ranks 6th in the number of 30+ yard completions (23) and 16th in the number of 20+ yard completions (45). So, the stats show that ND has been pretty successful with its downfield passing game.

Rees has thrown 11 interceptions, about 1 interception for every 30 passes.

Overall, Rees has a pass efficiency rating of 141.6, which ranks 42nd in the nation, and averages 8.2 yards/attempt, which ranks 25th. That compares to Hogan's 150.9 pass efficiency rating, which ranks 22nd, and 8.5 yards/attempt, which ranks 18th.

ND's top receiver is TJ Jones -- 59 receptions, 986 yards, 16.7 yds/catch, 8 TDs. As a point of reference, those stats are somewhat similar to Ty Montgomery's (50 receptions, 822 yds, 16.4 yds/catch, 9 TDs).

ND protects the passer very well. ND has allowed only 7 sacks and ranks 2nd in the nation in fewest sacks allowed. On the other hand, Trent Murphy leads the nation in sacks (13 sacks) and Stanford as a team ranks 8th (34 sacks). Something has to give.

Rushing offense:

ND is more of a pass-oriented team than a run-oriented team. ND averages just 33.9 rushing attempts per game, which ranks 111th in the nation. ND has a decent rushing average, 4.62 (50th); avoiding sacks helps that rushing average. ND has only 10 rushing TDs all year long, which ranks 109th in the nation. That compares to 25 TD passes.

ND's leading rushers are Cam McDaniel (608 yds, 4.6 yds/att) and George Atkinson III (554 yds, 6.2 yds/att).

Rees is not a threat to run. He has only 8 rushing attempts all year long, 7 of which were sacks.

Total defense:

ND's defense is not up to the standard of last year's ND defense. It is good, but not great. ND allows 373.2 yards/game (43rd), compared to 305.5 yards/game last year. ND allows 5.1 yards per play (26th). Stanford's defense allows 4.8 yards per play (18th).

ND allows 3rd down conversions at a rate of 41.3%, which ranks 81st in the nation. In comparison, Stanford's defense allows 31.9%, 12th.

ND does not get many tackles for loss -- 57, 101st in the nation. Stanford has 84 TFLs, 11th in the nation.

Pass defense:

Statistically, ND's pass defense is somewhat similar to Stanford's. ND's pass defense efficiency rating is 124.7, 61st in the nation, compared to Stanford's 123.0, 51st. ND allows 6.3 yards/attempt, 18th, compared to 6.2 yards/attempt, 15th for Stanford.

The main difference between ND's and Stanford's pass defenses is in the pass rush. ND doesn't get a lot of sacks -- 15 sacks, 103rd in the nation. Stanford does get a lot of sacks -- 34 sacks, 8th.

Rushing defense:

ND allows 167.9 rushing yards per game (69th) and 4.1 yards/attempt (62nd). It's just an average rushing defense. By comparison, Stanford allows 89.9 yards per game (3rd) and 2.97 yards per attempt (5th).

Shaw has mentioned more than once the importance of "strength in your middle": running back, fullback, quarterback, center, nose tackle, ILB/MLB, safety.

Well, Notre Dame's middle from 2012 has been gutted:

Running back: #1 Theo Riddick and #2 Cierre Wood graduated.
Quarterback:  Everett Golson dq'd academically.
Center: Mike Golic graduated and his replacement is now out for the season.
Nose tackle: A-A Louis Nix is out for the season.
MLB: A-A Manti T'eo graduated. 
S:  All four ND safeties--inlcuding Stanford recruit Zeke Motta--graduated.

What is left is an ND team that may have fewer elite players than any recent Irish team.  DE Stephen Tuitt is a likely first-rounder and OL Zack Martin is expected to go in the second round.  But that's it for first day guys (including Nix in round one), and it's possible that only two other Irish guys--WR Jones and DB Bennett Jackson--will be drafted. 

It appears that Notre Dame will start only eight guys who started against last year, three on offense and five on defense.  We will play 13 returning starters bmc.

Our chances are good.

Tough game to call - Mick - 11-27-2013

Notre Dame is 1-3 on the road against the spread.  Stanford is 4-2 at home against the spread.

Stanford is 3-3 at home on the over/under, Notre Dame is 2-2 away on the over under.

I'd take Stanford as a teaser -7.

If you throw out non-FBS opponents, Stanford is number 1 in sacks.
